Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your US passport needs to be valid for the entire time you're in Vatican City. Vatican City does not enforce the 6-month validity rule, but your airline might — check with them before you fly.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from the Schengen area
Immigration officers at Rome's airports routinely ask for a return or onward ticket showing you'll leave the Schengen zone within 90 days. Have a printed or digital copy ready — budget airlines check this at check-in too.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Carry a hotel confirmation or a letter from a host in Vatican City or nearby Rome. Border officers rarely ask for it, but having it avoids delays if they do.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during the stay
Have a bank statement or credit card ready showing access to around €50–100 per day. Officers almost never check this for US passport holders, but it's good to have on hand.Recommended
Vatican City is part of the Schengen Area
Your 90-day visa-free stay applies across all Schengen countries (including Italy, France, Spain, etc.). Days spent in Vatican City count toward your Schengen total.
No formal border control
There is no immigration checkpoint at the Vatican border. You simply walk in. However, Italian police may ask for your passport at St. Peter's Square or the Vatican Museums. Always carry it.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Rome Airport
Fly into Rome's Fiumicino (FCO) or Ciampino (CIA) airport. After clearing Italian immigration (where your passport will be stamped), take a train or taxi to Vatican City. There is no separate border control for Vatican City.
2
Present Your Passport (if asked)
Vatican guards or Italian police may ask for your passport at St. Peter's Basilica or the Vatican Museums. Have it ready, but there is no formal immigration checkpoint.
3
Show Supporting Documents (if requested)
If asked, show your return ticket, accommodation booking, and proof of insurance. Keep them on your phone or printed.
4
Receive Entry Stamp (if applicable)
Vatican City does not routinely stamp passports. If you want a souvenir stamp, visit the Vatican Post Office inside the city walls.
