What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents before departure
Gather your passport (valid 6+ months beyond entry), return ticket, accommodation booking, and travel insurance. Save digital copies on your phone and print backups. At check-in, the airline may ask to see your return ticket.
2
Arrive at Brussels Airport or other entry point
At Brussels Airport (BRU) or Charleroi (CRL), follow signs to 'Non-EU Passports' queue. Have your passport and supporting documents ready. The officer will check your passport, ask about your trip purpose and length of stay, and stamp your passport. The whole process usually takes 2-5 minutes.
3
Enter Belgium and the Schengen Area
Once stamped, you're free to travel within all Schengen countries for up to 90 days. Keep your passport safe — you'll need it for hotel check-ins and any police checks. Count your days carefully; overstaying can lead to fines or a re-entry ban.

Frequently asked questions

No. Uruguayans can enter Belgium visa-free for up to 90 days within any 180-day period for tourism, business, or short study.
Generally no. The 90-day Schengen limit is strict. Extensions are only granted in exceptional circumstances (e.g., medical emergency, force majeure) and must be applied for at the local commune (town hall) before your stay expires. Overstaying without approval can result in fines or a re-entry ban.
Overstaying is taken seriously. You may be fined, detained, and banned from re-entering the Schengen Area for up to 5 years. Always track your days carefully.
Yes. Immigration and the airline will likely ask for proof of onward travel. A return flight, a flight to a non-Schengen country, or a bus/train ticket out of the Schengen Area all count.
No. Visa-free entry is for tourism, business meetings, conferences, and short-term study. You cannot take paid employment or start a business. For work, you need a work visa or permit arranged by your employer before travel.
You must apply for a long-stay visa (type D) or a residence permit from the Belgian embassy in Uruguay before you travel. This is for study, work, family reunification, or retirement. The process takes several weeks.
Not strictly required at the border, but strongly recommended. If you need medical care, a hospital stay can cost hundreds of euros per day. Insurance covering at least €30,000 in medical expenses and repatriation is the standard recommendation.
