What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Japanese airport
You'll go through immigration at Narita, Haneda, Kansai, or whichever airport you land at. Follow the 'Foreign Passports' signs.
2
Fill out arrival card (or use Visit Japan Web)
If you didn't pre-register on Visit Japan Web, you'll get a paper arrival card on the plane or at the airport. Fill it out in English or Japanese. If you pre-registered, just show the QR code at the automated gate.
3
Present passport and documents
Hand over your passport, the arrival card (or QR code), and your return ticket if asked. The officer may ask a few questions (purpose, length of stay). Answer briefly and honestly.
4
Get fingerprint and photo taken
All foreign visitors get fingerprints scanned and a photo taken at immigration. This is routine and takes 30 seconds.
5
Collect luggage and clear customs
After immigration, grab your bags from the carousel. If you have nothing to declare, use the green channel. If you have items over ¥200,000 or restricted goods, use the red channel.

Frequently asked questions

No. The visa-free stay is strictly 90 days and cannot be extended. If you want to stay longer, you need to apply for a proper visa (like a tourist visa or working holiday visa) before you travel. Overstaying can get you banned from re-entry.
No, as long as you stay airside and don't pass through immigration. If you want to leave the airport during a layover, you'll need to go through immigration and the 90-day visa-free rule applies.
You'll likely be denied boarding by the airline or refused entry at immigration. Renew your passport before traveling. If you can't renew in time, contact the Japanese embassy — but don't count on exceptions.
Technically, the visa-free entry is for tourism, business meetings, and short visits. Working remotely for a foreign company is a gray area. Most people do it without issues, but officially you're not supposed to 'work' in Japan. If you're caught, it could affect future entries.
Overstaying is taken seriously. You'll be detained, fined, and possibly deported. A ban from re-entering Japan for several years is common. Don't risk it.
Yes, but immigration may question you if you spend more than 180 days total in Japan in a 12-month period. They might suspect you're living there without a proper visa. Keep trips reasonable.
No, it's not required for entry. But medical costs in Japan are high — a simple hospital visit can cost ¥50,000+ (about $350). Insurance is cheap and covers that. Get it.
