Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your entry date. If it expires sooner, you'll be denied boarding or entry. Renew your passport well before your trip.

What happens at the border

1
Arrival at Oslo Gardermoen or other airport
After landing, follow signs to 'Passport Control' (non-EU/EEA queue). Have your passport, return ticket, and accommodation confirmation ready. The officer will check your passport and may ask about your trip purpose and length of stay. Answer clearly. You'll get a stamp in your passport — that's your entry permission.
2
Entering via land border from Sweden or Finland
If you're driving or taking a bus from Sweden or Finland, there are no regular passport checks at land borders. But you must still comply with Schengen rules. Keep your documents handy in case of random checks.
3
During your stay
You can move freely within the Schengen area (26 countries) for up to 90 days total. Keep your passport with you. If you overstay, you risk fines and future entry bans.

Frequently asked questions

No, if you stay airside (don't pass through passport control) and your connecting flight is within the same day. If you need to enter Norway (e.g., to switch airports or stay overnight), you'll need to meet the visa-free entry requirements.
No. The 90-day visa-free stay is for tourism, business meetings, and family visits only. You cannot work for a Norwegian company or freelance for local clients. Remote work for a foreign employer is a grey area — technically not allowed, but rarely enforced for short stays. For certainty, check with the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (UDI).
You'll be fined and may be banned from re-entering the Schengen area for up to 5 years. Overstaying is taken seriously. If you need to stay longer, apply for a visa extension before your 90 days expire.
Extensions are only granted in exceptional circumstances (e.g., medical emergency, force majeure). You must apply at the local police station before your visa-free period ends. Standard tourism or work is not a valid reason.
No, for stays under 90 days. If you stay longer than 90 days (e.g., with a residence permit), you must register with the police within 90 days of arrival.
Yes. Norway is a Schengen member, so your 90-day limit applies to the entire Schengen zone. Days spent in other Schengen countries (e.g., France, Germany) count toward your 90-day total.
Norwegian Krone (NOK). Credit cards are accepted almost everywhere, even for small purchases. Carry a small amount of cash for emergencies, but you can usually pay by card.
