Visa on arrival is straightforward
You don't need to apply online or visit an embassy. Just show up with your passport, $30 USD, and a return ticket. The whole process at Kigali airport takes about 15 minutes.
Cash is king for the visa fee
The card terminal works most of the time, but when it doesn't, you'll need cash. Bring $30 USD in good condition. Old, torn, or marked bills may be rejected.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Kigali International Airport
After landing, follow signs to 'Visa on Arrival' or 'Immigration'. There's a dedicated counter before the main passport control queue. Wait time is usually 10-20 minutes.
2
Fill out the visa application form
You'll receive a small paper form. Fill in your personal details, passport info, and accommodation address. A pen is provided, but carrying your own is faster.
3
Submit form and pay the fee
Hand the completed form, your passport, and $30 USD (or card) to the immigration officer. They'll process the visa sticker and paste it into your passport.
4
Proceed to passport control
Once the visa sticker is in your passport, join the main passport control queue. The officer will stamp you in. Keep your boarding pass handy — they sometimes ask for it.
5
Collect luggage and exit
After passport control, head to baggage claim. Customs is usually quick — just walk through the green channel unless you have something to declare.

Yes, you can extend your 30-day visa once you're in Rwanda. Visit the Directorate General of Immigration and Emigration in Kigali (KG 7 Ave, near the airport). Extensions cost around $50 USD and can give you up to 90 days total. Apply before your current visa expires.
Visa on arrival is available at all official land borders, including the main ones from Uganda (Gatuna/Katuna), Tanzania (Rusumo), and DR Congo (Goma/Gisenyi). The process is the same — fill a form, pay $30, get the sticker. Wait times can be longer at busy crossings.
No, the visa on arrival fee is charged in USD only. If you pay in Rwandan francs, they'll convert at a poor rate. Bring $30 USD cash in good condition (no torn or old bills). Credit cards are accepted but the terminal can be unreliable.
Yes, if you're arriving from a country with yellow fever risk (including many African countries). If you're flying directly from Uruguay, you don't need it. But if you've been in any yellow fever endemic country within 6 days before arrival, you must show a yellow fever vaccination certificate. Carry it just in case.
You will be denied boarding by the airline and refused entry at immigration. Rwanda strictly enforces the 6-month validity rule. Renew your passport before traveling.
No, the standard visa on arrival is single-entry only. If you need multiple entries (e.g., for trips to neighboring countries), apply for an e-visa in advance through the Rwanda Immigration website. The e-visa costs $50 for a 90-day multiple-entry visa.
No, Uruguayans do not have visa-free access to Rwanda. Visa on arrival is the standard option. There's no need to apply in advance unless you want a multiple-entry visa.
