Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa application
Apply before travel
Apply for your Ethiopia eVisa at the official portal before departure. Processing takes up to 3 business days — do not wait until the last minute. Print the approval email and carry it with your passport.Apply for eVisaRequired
Valid passport
Must cover your stay
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry into Ethiopia. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for entry
Immigration officers at Addis Ababa Bole Airport routinely ask for proof of onward travel. Have a printed or digital copy of your return or onward ticket ready.Required
Proof of accommodation
Recommended to carry
Hotel booking confirmations or a letter of invitation from your host can speed up the immigration process. Officers may ask where you are staying — have the address and contact number handy.Recommended
Proof of funds
Recommended to carry
Carry a bank statement or credit card showing you can cover your stay. Immigration rarely asks, but having it ready avoids delays if questioned.Recommended
E-visa only valid for air entry
Your e-visa is only accepted at Bole International Airport. If you plan to cross into Ethiopia by land from Kenya, Sudan, or Djibouti, you need a different visa — apply at the Ethiopian embassy in Tashkent.
Keep digital copies of everything
Save your e-visa PDF, passport photo, and hotel booking on your phone and in cloud storage. If you lose the printout, you can show the digital version at immigration.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for the e-visa online
Go to www.evisa.gov.et, fill in your passport details, upload a passport photo, and pay the fee (around $52 USD for a 30-day single entry). Processing takes 1–3 business days. You'll receive an approval email — print it or save the PDF.
2
Pack your documents
Before heading to the airport, gather: passport (6+ months validity), printed e-visa approval, return ticket, first night hotel booking, and travel insurance (optional but smart). Keep digital copies on your phone too.
3
Arrive at Bole International Airport (Addis Ababa)
After landing, follow signs to 'Immigration' or 'Visa on Arrival' — but you already have your e-visa, so go to the 'E-Visa' or 'Foreign Passports' queue. Present your passport and e-visa approval. The officer will stamp you in. No extra payment needed.
4
Collect your luggage and exit
After immigration, pick up your bags from the carousel, then walk through customs (green channel if nothing to declare). You're in Ethiopia.
