Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for at least the length of your stay in Chile. Airlines may enforce a 6-month validity rule, so check with your carrier before departure.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of exit from Chile
Immigration officers at Santiago Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy of your outbound flight ready.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a hotel reservation or a letter from your host in Chile. Officers rarely ask for it, but having it avoids delays at the counter.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Have a bank statement or credit card ready. Immigration may ask for proof of at least $1,000 USD or equivalent for your stay.Recommended
Passport validity is critical
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you arrive in Chile. Airlines check this before boarding — if you're short, you won't fly. Renew early.
No visa, but have a return ticket
Even though you don't need a visa, immigration officers often ask for proof of onward travel. A return or onward ticket (screenshot is fine) is your best friend.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents
Before you fly, check your passport validity (6+ months from arrival), print or save your return ticket and first night's hotel booking. Also grab a travel insurance policy and an eSIM if you want data immediately.
2
Arrive at Santiago International Airport (SCL)
After landing, follow signs to 'Migraciones' (Immigration). Join the queue for foreign passports. Have your passport, boarding pass, and return ticket ready. The officer will stamp your passport with a 90-day entry. No visa fee.
3
Pass through customs
After immigration, collect your luggage and proceed to customs. You may be asked to declare goods over $500 or restricted items. Green channel for nothing to declare, red channel if you have something.
4
Exit and start your trip
Once through customs, you're free to leave the airport. Taxis, Uber, and airport buses are available to Santiago city center.

Frequently asked questions

No, you don't. Vietnam passport holders get visa-free entry for up to 90 days for tourism or business. Just show up with a valid passport (6+ months) and a return ticket.
No, the visa-free entry is not extendable. If you want to stay longer, you'd need to leave Chile and re-enter, or apply for a different visa type before your 90 days expire. Overstaying can result in fines or a ban.
You'll likely be denied boarding by the airline or entry by Chilean immigration. Renew your passport before traveling. The 6 months are counted from your arrival date in Chile.
No, there's no official requirement to show bank statements or cash. But if asked, having a credit card or some cash (around $500) is a good idea to prove you can support yourself.
Not for entry, but it's strongly recommended. Medical costs in Chile are high — a simple hospital visit can cost $200–$500. Insurance covers that and also trip cancellation or lost luggage.
Yes, you can enter via land borders (e.g., from Mendoza, Argentina or Tacna, Peru). The same visa-free rules apply — just have your passport and return ticket ready. Land crossings may have longer queues.
Overstaying is taken seriously. You may be fined (around $100–$200) and could face a ban from re-entering Chile for a period. Always leave before your 90 days are up.
