RequirementDetailsStatus

Valid passport
Must cover full stay
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended departure date from Ethiopia. Airlines at Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City check this strictly before boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for entry
Immigration officers at Bole International Airport ask for a confirmed return or onward ticket. Have a printed copy or a screenshot ready on your phone — they rarely accept verbal promises.Required
Proof of accommodation
Recommended
Carry a hotel booking confirmation or an invitation letter from your host in Ethiopia. Officers occasionally ask for it, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Recommended
Have access to at least $200 USD in cash or a credit card for your stay. Immigration may ask how you plan to support yourself — showing a bank statement or card works fine.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your departure date from Ethiopia. Airlines at Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City check this before boarding — if your passport expires sooner, you won't be allowed to fly.
Travel insurance with medical evacuation is strongly advised
Medical facilities in Addis Ababa are limited and basic outside the capital. Serious conditions require evacuation. A good travel insurance policy with medical evacuation coverage can save you thousands of dollars.
eVisa is the only option — no visa on arrival
Vietnam passport holders cannot get a visa on arrival in Ethiopia. You must apply for an eVisa at evisa.gov.et before travel. Processing takes 3 business days, so plan ahead.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for your eVisa online
Go to evisa.gov.et, fill out the application, upload a passport photo and a scan of your passport bio page, and pay the fee ($52 for 30 days, $72 for 90 days). Processing takes 3 business days. Apply at least a week before your flight.
2
Pack your documents
Print or save to your phone: your eVisa approval email, passport (valid 6+ months beyond departure), return ticket, hotel booking, and proof of funds. Keep them easily accessible.
3
Arrive at Bole International Airport (ADD)
After landing in Addis Ababa, follow signs to 'Immigration' or 'Visa on Arrival' (though you already have your eVisa). Join the queue for 'eVisa holders' or 'Foreign Passports'. Present your passport and eVisa printout. The officer will check your return ticket and may ask about accommodation. Expect 15–30 minutes in line.
4
Collect your luggage and exit
After immigration, proceed to baggage claim, then customs. If you have nothing to declare, use the green channel. Exit into the arrivals hall.
