Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus

Apply for your Nigeria eVisa at the official Nigeria Immigration Service portal before travel. The eVisa is a single-entry permit valid for up to 90 days. Processing takes 3–5 business days, so apply at least a week before your flight.Apply for eVisaRequired
Valid passport
Original passport
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended departure date from Nigeria. It must have at least two blank visa pages for entry and exit stamps.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of onward travel
Immigration officers at Lagos and Abuja airports routinely ask for a confirmed onward or return ticket. Airlines also check this before boarding — without one, you may be denied check-in.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host letter
Have a printed hotel reservation or a letter of invitation from your Nigerian host ready. Immigration may ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a pre-arranged itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Bank statement or cash
Carry a recent bank statement or enough cash (around $500–$1,000 USD equivalent) to cover your stay. Immigration can ask for proof of financial means, though it's not always enforced.Recommended
Malaria is a real risk
Malaria is present year-round nationwide. Prophylaxis (e.g., atovaquone-proguanil, doxycycline) is strongly recommended for all travellers. Also use mosquito repellent and sleep under nets.
Transit without a visa is possible
If you're transiting through Nigeria and staying airside (not passing through immigration), you don't need a visa. But if you need to enter the country — for example, to change airports or collect luggage — you must have a visa.
Overstay penalties are steep
Overstaying your visa costs $20 USD per day, up to $500 USD. Avoid it by leaving on time. If you need to stay longer, contact the Nigeria Immigration Service before your visa expires.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for the eVisa online
Go to portal.immigration.gov.ng, fill in the application, upload your passport photo and passport data page, and pay the $160 fee. You'll receive an approval letter by email in 3–5 business days. Print it and carry it with you.
2
Prepare your documents for travel
Print your eVisa approval, hotel booking, return ticket, and bank statement. Keep them together in a folder. Also save digital copies on your phone.
3
Arrive at a Nigerian airport
You'll land at Lagos (LOS), Abuja (ABV), or Port Harcourt (PHC). Follow signs to immigration. Join the queue for 'Foreign Passports' or 'Visitors'. Have your passport, eVisa printout, and return ticket ready.
4
Go through immigration
Hand over your documents. The officer may ask your purpose of visit, where you're staying, and how long you'll be in Nigeria. Answer clearly. They'll stamp your passport with an entry stamp valid for up to 90 days.
5
Collect your luggage and exit
After immigration, proceed to baggage claim, then customs. If you have nothing to declare, use the green channel. Exit into the arrivals hall.
