South African passport holders need a visa to enter Bulgaria in 2026. You must apply at the Bulgarian embassy or consulate in your home country before you travel — there is no visa-on-arrival or e-visa option for South Africans.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Visa application
Schengen visa (C-type)
Apply for a Schengen visa at the Bulgarian embassy or consulate in your home country. You need a completed application form, valid passport, travel insurance (minimum €30,000 coverage), flight itinerary, and proof of accommodation. Processing takes 15 calendar days typically.Apply for visaRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your intended departure from Bulgaria
Your South African passport needs at least two blank pages for visa stamps. The 3-month validity rule is strictly enforced at border control — airlines also check this before boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of onward travel
Immigration officers at Sofia Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy ready — they check this before stamping your passport.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Carry a hotel reservation confirmation or a notarized invitation letter from your host in Bulgaria. Border officers may ask to see it during the visa application process or upon arrival.Recommended
Proof of funds
Bank statements or cash
Show you have at least €50 per day of your stay (or equivalent in Bulgarian lev). A recent bank statement or credit card with sufficient limit works — keep it accessible at passport control.Recommended
Apply early — no visa on arrival
Bulgaria does not offer visa-on-arrival or e-visa for South Africans. You must get a visa from the embassy before you travel. Processing takes 2–4 weeks, so plan ahead.
Bulgaria uses the Bulgarian Lev (BGN)
The local currency is the Bulgarian Lev (BGN), not the euro. 1 BGN is roughly 0.51 EUR. ATMs are widely available in cities. Credit cards are accepted in most hotels and restaurants, but carry some cash for smaller shops and taxis.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for a visa at the Bulgarian embassy
Contact the Bulgarian embassy in Pretoria or the consulate in Cape Town. Book an appointment, submit your application form, passport, photos, travel insurance, flight and accommodation bookings, and proof of funds. Pay the visa fee (around €80 for adults). Processing takes 2–4 weeks.
2
Wait for visa approval
Once approved, your passport will be stamped with the visa. Check the validity dates — they match your intended stay. Do not book non-refundable flights until you have the visa in hand.
3
Arrive in Bulgaria
At Sofia Airport or any border crossing, join the queue for non-EU passports. Hand over your passport (with visa), return ticket, and accommodation proof if asked. The officer may ask your purpose of visit and length of stay. Answer clearly. You'll get an entry stamp.
4
During your stay
Carry your passport and a copy of your visa at all times. If you lose your passport, report it immediately to the nearest police station and your embassy.
