Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Chile requires your passport to be valid for at least the length of your stay. Airlines may enforce a 6-month validity rule — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Chile
Immigration officers at Santiago (SCL) routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy ready — they may deny boarding if you cannot show one.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a hotel confirmation, Airbnb receipt, or a letter from your host. Officers rarely ask for it, but having it avoids delays.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Chile does not set a fixed minimum, but have a bank statement or credit card ready. Officers may ask if you look underfunded.Recommended
Overstaying = fine + possible ban
Chile enforces the 90-day limit strictly. Overstay by even a day and you'll be fined. Overstay by months and you risk a multi-year re-entry ban. Set a calendar reminder to leave before day 90.
Register with PDI if staying >30 days
If you plan to stay more than 30 days, register your address with the Chilean police (PDI) within 30 days of arrival. It's free and quick. Find your nearest PDI office online.

What happens at the border

1
Arrival at Santiago (SCL) or other airport
After landing, follow signs to 'Extranjería' or 'Migraciones'. Join the queue for foreign passports. Have your passport and return ticket ready. The officer will stamp your passport with a 90-day tourist entry. The whole process usually takes 10–20 minutes.
2
Land border crossing (e.g., from Argentina or Peru)
At land borders, go through Chilean immigration at the border post. Same requirements apply: passport, return ticket, and sometimes proof of accommodation. Queues can be longer at busy crossings like Mendoza–Santiago.
3
After entry – register your address (if staying >30 days)
If you plan to stay more than 30 days, register your local address with the Chilean police (Policía de Investigaciones, PDI) within 30 days of arrival. Go to any PDI office with your passport and proof of accommodation. It's free and takes about 15 minutes.

Frequently asked questions

No, the 90-day tourist visa is not extendable. To stay longer, leave Chile before day 90 and re-enter (e.g., cross into Argentina for a day and come back). Immigration may grant a new 90-day stay on re-entry, but it's at their discretion.
Overstaying is treated seriously. You'll be fined approximately 100 USD per month overstayed, and you may be banned from re-entering Chile for up to 3 years. Always leave before day 90.
If you transit through Santiago (SCL) and don't leave the international transit area, no visa is needed. But if you enter Chile (even for a few hours), you must meet the same visa-free entry requirements.
Technically, the tourist visa does not permit work. However, remote work for a foreign employer is generally tolerated as long as you don't provide services to a Chilean company. The rules are vague, so keep a low profile.
You will almost certainly be denied boarding by the airline or refused entry by Chilean immigration. Renew your passport before travel. There are no exceptions for South African passport holders.
Not routinely, but immigration officers can ask. It's wise to have a bank statement or credit card showing you can support yourself (roughly 50 USD per day). Most travellers are never asked.
No, the same visa-free rules apply. But you must fill out a special entry form (Formulario de Ingreso a Rapa Nui) before your flight. The airline will provide it. You also need a confirmed hotel booking on the island.
