Valid passport
Must cover entire stay
Your passport must be valid for the entire duration of your stay in the Czech Republic. Schengen rules do not require 6 months beyond departure, but some airlines enforce it — check with your carrier before flying.Required

Proof of onward travel
Immigration at Prague Airport routinely asks for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy ready — they check this before stamping you in.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Carry a confirmed hotel booking or a notarized invitation letter from your Czech host. Border officers sometimes ask for this during the entry interview.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Have bank statements or a credit card showing access to at least 1,100 CZK per day of stay. Officers rarely ask, but it's a legal requirement under Czech immigration law.Recommended
Apply early — slots fill up fast
The Czech embassy in Pretoria has limited appointment slots, especially during peak travel season (June–August). Book your appointment at least 3 weeks in advance. If you can't find a slot, check daily — cancellations sometimes open up.
No visa-on-arrival or e-visa
There is no way to get a Czech visa at the airport or online. You must apply at the embassy before you travel. The only exception is if you hold a valid Schengen visa from another country — then you can enter the Czech Republic under that visa.

What happens at the border

1
Gather your documents
Collect all required documents: passport, photos, insurance, flight reservation, accommodation proof, bank statements, and the completed application form. Make photocopies of everything — the embassy keeps your originals.
2
Book an appointment at the Czech embassy in Pretoria
The Czech Republic does not outsource visa applications in South Africa — you apply directly at the embassy in Pretoria. Appointments are booked via their online system. Slots fill up, especially in summer, so book 2–3 weeks ahead.
3
Attend your appointment in person
Show up at the Czech Embassy, 936 Schoeman Street, Arcadia, Pretoria, at your scheduled time. Bring all documents plus a copy of your appointment confirmation. You'll submit biometrics (fingerprints and photo). The interview is usually brief — they just verify your documents and ask about your travel plans.
4
Wait for processing
Standard processing takes 15 calendar days. It can extend to 30 days if they need more documents or 45 days in exceptional cases. You'll get a call or email when your passport is ready for collection. You cannot track the status online.
5
Collect your passport
Pick up your passport from the embassy in Pretoria during their collection hours (usually 10:00–12:00 on weekdays). Check the visa sticker carefully: name, dates, number of entries, and validity period. If anything is wrong, tell them immediately.

No. The Czech Republic does not use visa application centres in South Africa. You must apply in person at the Czech Embassy in Pretoria. There is no option to apply by mail or at a VFS office.
The Schengen visa fee is €80 for adults (about R1,500 depending on the exchange rate), €40 for children aged 6–12, and free for children under 6. The fee is paid in South African rand at the embassy's rate on the day of your appointment.
Yes, you need a round-trip flight reservation (not necessarily a paid ticket) showing your entry and exit dates. A travel agent can hold a reservation for you without paying. Do not buy a non-refundable ticket until your visa is approved.
If the Czech Republic is your main destination (longest stay), apply at the Czech embassy. If you're spending equal time in multiple countries, apply at the embassy of the country where you enter first. You need travel insurance valid for the entire Schengen area.
Schengen short-stay visas (type C) cannot be extended except in extraordinary circumstances like medical emergencies or force majeure. You must leave the Schengen area before your visa expires. Overstaying can result in fines and a ban.
You will receive a formal rejection letter stating the reason. You can appeal within 15 days by writing to the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The appeal process takes 30–60 days. Common reasons: insufficient funds, weak travel history, or incomplete documents.
