Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your stay
Your South African passport needs at least 6 months of validity remaining from your date of entry into Fiji. Airlines check this before boarding — if your passport expires sooner, you'll be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Fiji
Immigration officers at Nadi Airport will ask to see a confirmed onward or return ticket before they stamp you in. A flight booking to South Africa or any other country works — just have the itinerary ready on your phone or printed.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Have a hotel reservation, resort confirmation, or a letter from a host in Fiji ready. Officers rarely ask for it, but if you're arriving without a clear place to stay, they may question your plans.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Carry evidence of at least FJD 500 (around ZAR 4,000) per person for your stay — bank statement or cash works. Immigration can ask for it, though they usually don't for short visits.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Fiji requires your passport to be valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry. Airlines check this before boarding — if your passport expires sooner, you will not be allowed to fly.
No visa needed, but be prepared
You do not need to apply for anything before you go. Just show up with a valid passport, return ticket, and accommodation details. Immigration at Nadi is usually straightforward — the whole process takes about 15-30 minutes.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents
Before you fly, check your passport validity (6+ months from arrival), print or save your return ticket and first night's booking confirmation. Get travel insurance and a local eSIM if you want data on landing.
2
Arrive at Nadi or Suva airport
Most international flights land at Nadi International Airport (NAN). Suva's Nausori Airport (SUV) also handles some flights. Follow signs to 'Immigration' — it is usually a single queue.
3
Present your passport and documents
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask for your return ticket and accommodation details. Answer clearly. They will stamp your passport with a visitor permit valid for up to 120 days.
4
Collect luggage and exit
After immigration, proceed to baggage claim, then customs. There is a green channel for nothing to declare, red channel for goods over FJD 1,000 or restricted items.

Frequently asked questions

No. The visa-free entry is not extendable. If you want to stay longer, you would need to leave Fiji and re-enter, but immigration may question frequent back-to-back visits. For longer stays, apply for a visitor permit extension before your 120 days are up — but extensions are not guaranteed.
You will likely be denied boarding by the airline. Fiji immigration strictly enforces the 6-month validity rule. Renew your passport before traveling.
If you are staying airside and not passing through immigration, you do not need a visa. But if you need to clear immigration (e.g., to switch airports or overnight), the same visa-free rules apply — up to 120 days.
No. The visa-free entry is for tourism, visiting friends/family, or short business meetings. Paid work or study requires a separate work or student visa.
Your passport (valid 6+ months), return/onward ticket, and first night's accommodation booking. Travel insurance is not mandatory but smart to have. No arrival declaration form is needed.
No, departure tax is included in your airline ticket. You do not need to pay anything extra at the airport.
Overstaying is a breach of immigration law. You may be fined, detained, or banned from re-entering Fiji. Always leave before your permit expires.
