Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must cover entire stay
Your South African passport needs to be valid for the full duration of your stay in Hong Kong. Hong Kong does not enforce a strict 6-month validity rule, but airlines may check for at least 6 months — if your passport expires sooner, carry proof of onward travel.Required
Return or onward ticket
Outbound travel proof
Immigration officers at Hong Kong International Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket within 30 days. Have a printed or digital copy of your outbound booking ready — they check this before stamping you in.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel or host details
Carry a hotel confirmation or a letter of invitation from your host in Hong Kong. Officers rarely ask for it, but having it ready avoids delays if they do.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show sufficient cash or card
Have access to at least HK$3,000–5,000 (about US$400–650) in cash, a credit card, or a bank statement. Immigration may ask how you plan to support yourself during your stay.Recommended
Passport validity is strict
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you enter Hong Kong. If it's less, you'll be denied boarding by your airline or refused entry at immigration. Renew your passport before you book.
No visa needed, but have documents ready
You don't need a visa, but immigration officers can ask for proof of return travel and accommodation. Keep a printed or phone screenshot of your return ticket and hotel booking.

What happens at the border

1

3

After immigration, collect your luggage from the carousel, then walk through Customs (green channel if nothing to declare). You're in.
