Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your stay
Your South African passport needs at least 6 months of validity remaining from your departure date from Israel. Airlines check this at check-in and won't let you board without it.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Israel
Immigration officers at Ben Gurion Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket within the 90-day visa-free period. Have a printed or digital copy ready.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Have your hotel confirmation or a letter from your host ready. Border officers sometimes ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Carry a bank statement or credit card showing you have enough money for your trip. Immigration may ask for it if you look like you might work illegally or overstay.Recommended
Entry may be denied at border
Even with a valid passport and visa-free status, Israeli immigration officers have full discretion to deny entry. Be prepared to answer questions about your itinerary, accommodation, and purpose of visit. If you have a criminal record or previous immigration issues, consult an Israeli embassy before booking.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Ben Gurion Airport
You'll go through passport control at Terminal 3 (most international flights). Have your passport, boarding pass, and return ticket ready. The officer will ask about your trip purpose and length of stay — answer clearly and briefly.
2
Receive entry stamp
The officer stamps your passport with a visitor entry permit valid for up to 90 days. Check the stamp before leaving the counter — it shows your allowed stay period.
3
Collect luggage and exit
After passport control, proceed to baggage claim, then customs. There's usually no customs declaration for personal items. You're free to enter Israel.
