What happens at the border

1
Apply for a French Schengen visa

Bring your completed application form, passport, photos, flight itinerary, hotel bookings, insurance, and proof of funds. You'll give biometrics (fingerprints and photo). The interview is usually short — just confirm your travel plans.

Standard processing takes 15 calendar days. It can take up to 45 days if more checks are needed. Track your application online using the reference number from your appointment.
4
Collect your passport
Once approved, collect your passport from the visa centre or have it couriered. Check the visa sticker: make sure your name, passport number, and validity dates are correct.
5
Enter Monaco
Fly into Nice Côte d'Azur Airport (France), then take a bus, train, or taxi to Monaco (about 30 minutes). At the border, show your passport with the valid Schengen visa. No separate entry form is needed for Monaco.

Transiting through Monaco

No transit visa needed

South African passport holders transiting through Monaco (via Nice Airport, France) do not need a transit visa if staying airside and not entering Schengen area. However, Monaco has no airport; transit is via Nice, which is in France/Schengen. For airside transit at Nice, a Schengen transit visa may be required for some nationalities, but South Africans generally need a visa to enter Schengen even for transit. Check with French authorities.

Exceptions & conditions
  • Holders of a valid Schengen visa or residence permit may transit without additional visa.
  • Holders of a valid US, UK, or Canada visa may be exempt from transit visa requirements in some cases.
