Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa application
Apply online before travel
South African passport holders need an eVisa to enter Mongolia. Apply at the official Mongolia eVisa portal at least 5 working days before departure. The eVisa is single-entry only and costs around $50 USD depending on processing speed.Apply for eVisaRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your stay
Your passport needs at least 6 months of validity from your departure date from Mongolia. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of onward travel
Immigration officers at Ulaanbaatar's Chinggis Khaan International Airport routinely ask for a confirmed return or onward ticket. Have a printed copy or a screenshot ready on your phone.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Carry a printed hotel reservation or an invitation letter from your host in Mongolia. Immigration may ask for it, especially if you are arriving without a pre-booked tour.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Have a bank statement or credit card showing at least $50 USD per day of your stay. Immigration officers rarely ask, but it is better to have it ready.Recommended
eVisa is the only option
South African passport holders cannot get a visa on arrival in Mongolia. The eVisa must be approved before you board your flight. Apply at evisa.mn at least a week in advance.
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the date you enter Mongolia. If it's close to expiry, renew it before applying for the eVisa — otherwise your application will be rejected.
