Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your departure date from the Philippines
Philippine immigration strictly enforces the 6-month validity rule. Airlines also check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you'll be denied boarding. Carry a printed copy of your passport bio page as backup.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from the Philippines within 30 days
Immigration officers at NAIA and other Philippine airports routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Budget airlines like Cebu Pacific and AirAsia are especially strict — they may deny boarding without one. A refundable ticket or a cheap onward flight to a nearby country works.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter for your entire stay
Philippine immigration sometimes asks for a hotel booking or a letter of invitation from a host. Have a printed confirmation ready — a screenshot on your phone is risky if your battery dies. Airbnb bookings are accepted.Recommended
Proof of funds
Cash, bank statement, or credit card showing sufficient funds
Officers may ask how you'll support yourself during the stay. Carry at least PHP 10,000 (around $180) in cash or have a recent bank statement showing a balance of at least $500. A credit card with a decent limit also works.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Airlines will not let you board if your passport has less than 6 months validity from your entry date. No exceptions. Check your passport now and renew if needed.
Arrival card is mandatory
You must fill out an arrival card on the plane or at the airport. Keep a pen handy. The card asks for your hotel address, so have that info ready.
eSIMs save time at the airport
Instead of queuing for a local SIM at the airport, buy an Airalo eSIM before you travel. It activates as soon as you land — no paperwork, no queue.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents
Before you queue at immigration, have your passport, boarding pass, and onward ticket ready. If you have a printed hotel booking, keep it with your passport.
2
Fill out the arrival card
Keep a pen handy. The card asks for your hotel name and address, so have that info ready.
3
Queue at immigration
At Manila (NAIA), Cebu, or other international airports, join the 'Foreign Passports' queue. Hand over your passport, arrival card, and boarding pass. The officer may ask your purpose of visit and how long you're staying. Answer clearly and briefly.
4
Get your entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with a 30-day visa-free entry. Check the stamp says '30 days' and the date is correct. If it's less, ask politely for clarification.
5
Collect luggage and proceed
After immigration, head to baggage claim, then customs. If you have nothing to declare, use the green channel. Keep your passport and arrival card handy until you exit the airport.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, you can extend your stay once for up to 29 days at a Bureau of Immigration office. The extension costs around PHP 3,000 (about USD 55) and takes a few hours. You'll need your passport, a completed application form, and the fee. After that, you can apply for further extensions up to a total of 36 months.
Overstaying results in a fine of PHP 500 per month (about USD 9) plus a PHP 1,000 processing fee. You'll also need to pay for the extension. If you overstay by more than 6 months, you may be blacklisted. Always extend before your 30 days are up.
If you're transiting and staying airside (not passing immigration), you don't need a visa. But if you need to leave the airport or have a layover longer than 24 hours, you'll need to enter the country — and the 30-day visa-free rule applies.
Technically, visa-free entry is for tourism and business visits only. Remote work for a foreign employer is a grey area. Many digital nomads do it, but if you're asked by immigration, say you're on holiday. For long-term remote work, consider a 9(a) visa or a special work permit.
You will be denied boarding by the airline or refused entry at immigration. Renew your passport before you travel. There are no exceptions for South African passport holders.
It's not a standard requirement for South African passport holders, but immigration officers may ask. Have a credit card or bank statement ready. A good rule: carry at least PHP 10,000 (about USD 180) in cash or have a card with sufficient funds.
It depends. Minor offenses may not be an issue, but serious crimes (especially drug-related) can lead to denial. You may need to apply for a visa in advance and provide a police clearance certificate. Check with the Philippine embassy in South Africa before booking.
