Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to be in Russia. Airlines at Johannesburg and Cape Town check this before boarding — if your passport expires before you leave Russia, you'll be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Russia
Immigration officers at Sheremetyevo and Domodedovo routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy ready — they may also check that your onward flight is within the 90-day visa-free period.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Russian border officers sometimes ask where you're staying. A hotel confirmation or a letter from a host (with their registration at the local MVD office) covers this. Keep a copy on your phone or printed.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Officers may ask how you'll fund your trip. Have a bank statement or credit card showing at least $500–$1,000 available. Cash in USD or EUR is widely accepted at exchange points in Russian airports.Recommended
Passport validity is critical
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the date you enter Russia. If it expires sooner, you will be denied boarding or entry. Renew your passport well in advance.
Keep your departure card safe
The departure portion of the arrival card is your exit ticket. Lose it and you'll face delays and paperwork when leaving. Keep it inside your passport at all times.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents
Before you leave, check your passport validity (6+ months from entry date). Print or save your return ticket, hotel booking, and travel insurance confirmation. Download an eSIM if you're using one.
2
Fill out the arrival card
On the plane or at passport control, you'll receive a small white arrival card. Fill in your personal details, passport number, and the address of your first night's accommodation. Keep the departure portion with your passport until you leave.
3
Go through passport control
At major airports like Moscow Sheremetyevo (SVO) or St. Petersburg (LED), join the 'Foreign Passports' queue. Hand over your passport and arrival card. The officer may ask for your return ticket or hotel booking. Answer clearly. You'll get a stamp and the departure card back.
4
Collect your luggage and exit
After passport control, proceed to baggage claim, then customs. If you have nothing to declare, use the green channel. Exit into the arrivals hall.
5
Register your stay (if staying longer than 7 days)
If you're staying in one place for more than 7 days, your hotel or host must register you with the local migration office. Hotels do this automatically. If you're in a private rental, remind the host. You'll get a registration slip — keep it with your passport.
