Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa application
Apply before travel
South African passport holders need an eVisa to enter Suriname. Apply at the official Suriname visa portal — processing takes a few business days. Print the approval email and carry it with your passport.Apply for eVisaRequired
Valid passport
Must cover entire stay
Your passport must be valid for the full duration of your stay in Suriname. Carry at least two blank pages for entry and exit stamps.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure
Immigration officers routinely ask for a confirmed onward or return ticket. Have a printed or digital copy ready — they check this at the counter.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Have a hotel reservation or a letter from your host in Suriname ready. Officers may ask for it during entry questioning.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can cover your stay
Carry bank statements or a credit card showing you have enough money for your trip. Immigration may ask for proof of financial means.Recommended
eVisa is mandatory — no visa on arrival
You must apply and receive approval before you fly. There is no visa-on-arrival option for South African passport holders. Apply at least a week in advance.
Passport validity counts from entry date
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you land in Suriname, not from your departure date. If it expires sooner, renew it before applying for the eVisa.
Travel insurance is strongly recommended
While not always checked at immigration, medical costs in Suriname can be high. A basic travel insurance policy covers hospital stays, evacuation, and trip cancellations. Worth the small cost.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for the eVisa online
Go to the official Suriname eVisa website (or the link provided in your checklist). Fill in your personal details, passport info, and travel dates. Upload a digital passport photo and a scan of your passport bio page. Pay the fee (around $40–$60 USD, depending on processing speed). Submit and wait for approval — typically 3–5 business days.
2
Prepare your documents for travel
Print or save digital copies of your eVisa approval email, return ticket, accommodation booking, and travel insurance. Keep them in a folder on your phone or in your carry-on. Make sure your passport has at least 6 months validity and one blank page.
3
Arrive at Johan Adolf Pengel International Airport (PBM)
After landing, follow signs to 'Immigration' or 'Passport Control'. Join the queue for foreign passports. Have your passport, eVisa approval, return ticket, and accommodation booking ready. The officer will check your documents, stamp your passport, and let you through. The whole process usually takes 10–20 minutes if you have everything ready.
4
Collect your luggage and exit
After immigration, proceed to baggage claim. Then walk through customs (usually a green channel for most tourists). If asked, you can show your accommodation booking again. Exit into the arrivals hall.

Frequently asked questions

Standard processing takes 3–5 business days. Some applications are approved in 24 hours, but it's safer to apply at least a week before your flight. There's no expedited option listed officially.
No, the eVisa is not extendable. You must leave before it expires. If you need more time, you'd have to apply for a different visa type before travelling.
Rejections are rare but can happen if your documents are incomplete or your passport has less than 6 months validity. You can reapply with corrected info. There's no formal appeal process — just submit a new application.
If you're travelling directly from South Africa, no. But if you've been in a country with yellow fever (like Brazil or parts of Africa) within 6 days before arrival, you'll need a yellow fever certificate. Check the latest requirements before you go.
No. The eVisa is linked to your passport number, and temporary documents are not accepted. You need a valid, ordinary South African passport with at least 6 months validity.
The local currency is the Surinamese dollar (SRD). US dollars are widely accepted in hotels and larger shops, but you'll get better rates using local currency. ATMs are available in Paramaribo, but not everywhere. Bring some USD cash as a backup.
Generally yes, but exercise normal precautions. Petty crime like pickpocketing happens in crowded areas. Avoid walking alone at night in less busy parts of Paramaribo. Keep valuables in your hotel safe. The people are friendly and English is widely spoken in tourist areas.
