South African passport holders must get an e-Visa before traveling to Uganda. The entire process is online: you apply, pay, and receive the visa by email. As of 2026, this is the only option for tourism or business visits.

What happens at the border

Apply for the e-Visa online
Go to visas.immigration.go.ug, create an account, fill in the form, upload your passport photo and passport scan, and pay the fee. Processing usually takes 3–5 working days, but can be faster.

Receive your e-Visa by email
Once approved, you'll get a PDF. Print a copy and save it on your phone. You'll need to show it at the airport when you check in for your flight to Uganda.

Arrive at Entebbe International Airport
At immigration, present your passport, printed e-Visa, and return ticket. The officer will stamp you in. The whole process usually takes 10–15 minutes if you have everything ready.

South African passport holders transiting through Uganda do not need a transit visa if staying airside and not passing through immigration. However, if leaving the airport or staying overnight, a visa is required.
