Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your South African passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to stay in Uruguay. Uruguay does not enforce a 6-month validity rule beyond your departure date, but airlines may still check for at least 6 months of validity — confirm with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Uruguay
Immigration officers at Carrasco International Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight booking ready — a bus ticket to a neighboring country also works if you're leaving overland.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed or digital hotel reservation for your first few nights, or a letter of invitation from a host in Uruguay. Officers rarely ask for it, but having it ready avoids delays at the counter.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can cover your stay
Have a bank statement or credit card showing access to roughly $500–$1,000 USD for a short trip. Immigration does not enforce a fixed minimum, but they may ask how you plan to support yourself.Recommended
Passport validity is critical
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your arrival date. Airlines check this before boarding. If your passport expires sooner, you may be denied boarding even if you have a visa-free entry.
No visa, but have a plan
You don't need a visa, but immigration may ask for proof of onward travel and accommodation. Keep digital copies on your phone. It's rare to be asked, but better to be prepared.

What happens at the border

1
Arrival at immigration
When you land at Carrasco International Airport (MVD) in Montevideo, follow signs to 'Migración' (immigration). Join the queue for foreign passports. Have your passport and return ticket ready. The officer will stamp your passport and usually ask a couple of questions like how long you're staying and where you're staying. Answer clearly. The process takes 2-5 minutes.
2
Passport control
Hand over your passport. The officer checks your passport validity and blank page. They may ask for your return ticket. If everything's fine, they stamp you in. You're then free to collect your luggage and proceed to customs.
3
Customs (green/red channel)
After baggage claim, you'll go through customs. If you have nothing to declare, take the green channel. If you have goods over the duty-free limit or restricted items, take the red channel. Random checks happen.

Frequently asked questions

No, the 90-day visa-free stay cannot be extended. If you want to stay longer, you'd need to apply for a temporary residence permit before your 90 days are up. That's a separate process through Uruguay's immigration office (Dirección Nacional de Migración).
No, Uruguay does not require a yellow fever vaccine for entry from South Africa. However, if you've recently been in a country with yellow fever (like Brazil), you may be asked for proof of vaccination. Check current requirements before travel.
Overstaying can result in a fine and a ban from re-entering Uruguay for a period. The fine is calculated per day overstayed. It's best to leave before your 90 days are up or apply for an extension before the deadline (though extensions are not granted for visa-free stays).
Yes, you can enter by land from Argentina or Brazil. The same visa-free rules apply. You'll go through immigration at the border crossing. Have your passport and return ticket ready. Land crossings can be busier than airports, especially on weekends.
No, there is no arrival declaration form required for South African passport holders. You just go through passport control and customs.
Uruguay uses the Uruguayan peso (UYU). US dollars are widely accepted in tourist areas, but you'll get a better rate using local currency. ATMs are common in Montevideo and other cities. Credit cards are accepted in most hotels and restaurants.
Uruguay is generally safe for travellers, but like anywhere, take normal precautions. Avoid walking alone at night in unfamiliar areas, keep valuables out of sight, and use registered taxis or ride-sharing apps. Petty theft can happen in crowded areas.
