Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to be in Botswana. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires before you leave, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Botswana
Immigration officers routinely ask for a confirmed onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight out of Botswana ready — they check this before stamping you in.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Have your first night's hotel confirmation or a letter from your host ready. Officers at Sir Seretse Khama Airport ask for this regularly, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Carry a bank statement or credit card showing you have enough money for your stay. Immigration may ask how you plan to cover expenses — having a card with a reasonable limit usually satisfies them.Recommended
Visa-free for 90 days
Zambian passport holders get 90 days visa-free in Botswana. This is generous — many other nationalities only get 30 days. Make sure you leave before day 90.
Passport validity is strict
Botswana requires 6 months of passport validity from your entry date. If your passport expires sooner, you'll be turned away at the border. No exceptions.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at border
Whether you fly into Sir Seretse Khama International Airport (Gaborone) or Kasane Airport, or cross by road at Kazungula or Ramokgwebana, you'll go to the immigration desk.
2
Present your passport
Hand over your passport with at least 6 months validity and 1 blank page. The officer will check it and stamp you in.
3
Answer questions (if asked)
They may ask how long you're staying, where you're staying, and when you're leaving. Have your onward ticket and accommodation details ready.
4
Collect your passport
You'll get your passport back with an entry stamp. The stamp shows the date you must leave by (90 days from entry). Keep it safe.
