Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport must be valid for at least the length of your stay in Belize. Belize does not enforce a strict 6-month validity rule, but airlines may ask for it at check-in.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Belize
Immigration officers routinely ask for a return or onward ticket at the border. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight booking ready.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Officers may ask where you're staying. A hotel confirmation or a letter from your host with their address and phone number works.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Immigration can ask for evidence of sufficient funds. Carry a bank statement or credit card showing access to at least $100 USD per day of your stay.Recommended
30-day entry is standard
Immigration officers usually grant 30 days without asking. If you need less, just tell them. If you want more, you'll need to apply for an extension after arrival.
Overstaying is expensive
Overstaying even a day can result in a fine of $100 BZD or more, and could affect future travel to Belize. Set a reminder to leave or extend before your 30 days are up.

What happens at the border

1
Arrival at Philip Goldson International Airport (BZE)
After deplaning, follow signs to 'Immigration'. Join the queue for 'Foreign Passports'. Have your passport, boarding pass, and return ticket ready. The officer will stamp you in. The whole process usually takes 10–20 minutes.
2
Present documents at immigration counter
Hand over your passport and return ticket. The officer may ask your purpose of visit and where you're staying. Answer clearly. They'll stamp your passport with a 30-day entry.
3
Collect baggage and proceed to customs
After immigration, collect your luggage from the carousel. Walk through the green 'Nothing to Declare' channel if you have no restricted items. If asked, you may need to open bags.

Frequently asked questions

Zambian passport holders get 30 days on arrival. If you want to stay longer, you can apply for an extension at the Immigration Department in Belmopan or Belize City. Extensions cost around $50–100 BZD and are usually granted in 30-day increments.
Yes. Visit the Belize Immigration Department (Belmopan: 2nd Floor, Sir Edney Cain Building, Belize City: 115 Barrack Road). You'll need your passport, a completed application form, proof of funds, and a fee. Extensions are typically granted for 30 days at a time.
No, Belize does not require yellow fever vaccination for travellers arriving from Zambia. However, if you've recently been in a country with yellow fever, you may need proof. Check with your airline before departure.
You will likely be denied boarding by the airline. Belize immigration enforces the 6-month validity rule strictly. Renew your passport before you travel.
Yes, but the same visa-free policy applies. You'll go through immigration at the border crossing (e.g., Chetumal–Corozal or Melchor de Mencos–Benque Viejo). Have your passport and return ticket ready. The process is similar to the airport.
No, it's not required by law. But it's strongly recommended — medical costs in Belize can be high, and a basic policy costs very little.
Belize uses the Belize dollar (BZD), fixed at 2 BZD = 1 USD. US dollars are widely accepted everywhere. ATMs dispense BZD. Credit cards work in hotels and larger restaurants, but cash is king for taxis and small shops.
