Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to stay in Hong Kong. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires before you leave, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of onward travel
Immigration officers at Hong Kong International Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy ready — they check this before granting entry.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a hotel confirmation or a letter of invitation from your host in Hong Kong. Officers rarely ask for it, but having it avoids delays if they do.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient money for your stay
Have bank statements or cash showing you can support yourself — around 3,000 HKD per day is a safe benchmark. Immigration may ask if you look short on funds.Recommended
Arrival card is mandatory
You must fill out an arrival/departure card on the plane or at the airport before queuing for immigration. Keep it with your passport — you'll hand it to the officer along with your passport.
Overstaying is not worth the risk
Hong Kong takes overstays seriously. Even a few days can result in a fine, detention, and a ban. Set a reminder to leave before day 90.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents before the flight
Before you leave for the airport, double-check your passport validity (6+ months from entry date), print or save your return ticket and first-night hotel booking, and pack a pen for the arrival card. Download an eSIM or buy a local SIM at the airport to stay connected.
2
Fill out the arrival card on the plane
You'll receive a small white arrival/departure card during the flight. Fill it out in block capitals — your name, passport number, flight number, and the address of where you're staying. Keep it with your passport.
3
Queue at immigration at Hong Kong International Airport
After landing, follow signs to 'Arrivals' and join the queue for 'Visitors' (not residents). Have your passport, completed arrival card, and return ticket ready. The officer will check your documents, take a fingerprint scan (usually thumb), and stamp your passport. The whole process takes 5–15 minutes.
4
Collect your luggage and proceed to customs
After immigration, collect your bags from the carousel. Customs is usually a green channel for most tourists — just walk through unless you have something to declare. Then you're free to exit into the arrival hall.

Frequently asked questions

No, the visa-free stay for Zambian passport holders is not extendable. You must leave Hong Kong before the 90 days are up. Overstaying can result in fines, detention, or a ban from re-entering.
No, if you are transiting and not leaving the airport transit area, you do not need a visa. However, if you plan to enter Hong Kong between flights (e.g., to explore the city), you can use the 90-day visa-free entry as long as you meet the standard requirements.
You will likely be denied boarding by the airline or refused entry by Hong Kong immigration. Renew your passport before you travel. There are no exceptions for short stays.
It's not routinely asked, but immigration officers can request it. Have a credit card or a few hundred HKD in cash ready. There's no official minimum amount, but showing you can support yourself for the trip is enough.
No, the 90-day visa-free entry is strictly for tourism, business meetings, or short-term visits. You cannot take up employment, study a course longer than a few days, or engage in any paid activity. You need a proper visa for that.
Overstaying is a serious offense. You may be fined up to HKD 50,000, detained, and deported. You could also be banned from re-entering Hong Kong for a period. Always leave before your 90 days are up.
No specific vaccinations are required for entry from Zambia. However, it's wise to be up-to-date on routine vaccines like MMR, tetanus, and hepatitis A. Check with your doctor 4–6 weeks before travel.
