Zambian passport holders need a visa to enter North Korea. All tourism is strictly controlled and must be arranged through an approved tour operator — independent travel is not permitted. As of 2026, visas are issued only as part of a guided tour package.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Visa application
Visa required — apply through North Korean diplomatic missions
North Korea does not offer online visa applications. You must apply in person at a North Korean embassy or consulate, typically through a designated travel agency. Processing can take several weeks and requires an invitation letter. The official government portal is naenara.com.kp, but visa applications are handled through embassies, not online.Government portalRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for entire stay
Your passport must be valid for the full duration of your stay in North Korea. There is no formal 6-month validity rule, but airlines and immigration officers enforce validity for the entire trip. Carry a photocopy of your passport bio page separately.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for entry
Immigration officers at Pyongyang Sunan International Airport will ask to see your return or onward ticket. You cannot enter North Korea without a confirmed departure booking. Airlines also check this before boarding.Required
Proof of accommodation
Recommended — hotel booking confirmation
Most visitors to North Korea are required to stay in government-designated hotels. Have a printed hotel booking confirmation or tour itinerary ready. Immigration may ask for your accommodation details on arrival.Recommended
Proof of funds
Recommended — cash or card
Carry enough cash (USD, EUR, or CNY) for your stay — credit cards are rarely accepted outside Pyongyang. Immigration does not formally check funds, but you will need cash for incidentals and tips. ATMs are unreliable.Recommended
No independent travel allowed
You must be part of a guided tour at all times. Straying from the group or exploring on your own can lead to detention or deportation.
Visa issued on arrival — but pre-approved
Your visa sticker is physically issued when you land at Pyongyang airport, but only after your application has been approved in advance. You cannot just show up.

What happens at the border

1
Book a guided tour
Contact a North Korea–specialist tour operator (e.g., Koryo Tours, Young Pioneer Tours). Choose your tour dates and pay the deposit. The operator will ask for your passport details and a passport photo.
2
Submit visa application via operator
The tour operator submits your visa application to the North Korean embassy in Beijing or another designated embassy. Processing takes 2–4 weeks. You don't go to the embassy yourself.
3
Receive visa approval
Once approved, the operator sends you a visa confirmation number. The actual visa is usually issued on arrival at Pyongyang Sunan International Airport (FNJ).
4
Arrive at Pyongyang airport
At FNJ, proceed to immigration. Present your passport and the visa confirmation. Officials will issue the visa sticker and stamp you in. Keep your passport accessible — no hiding it in your bag.
5
Follow tour guide at all times
After immigration, your tour guide meets you. You must stay with the group for the entire trip. Independent movement is not allowed.
