Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must cover your entire stay in Rwanda
Your passport needs at least one blank page for the entry stamp. Rwanda does not require 6 months of validity beyond your departure date — just enough to cover your stay. Airlines may still ask for 6 months, so check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Rwanda
Immigration officers at Kigali International Airport routinely ask for a confirmed onward or return ticket. Have a printed or digital copy ready. Overland crossings are less strict, but still carry proof of your exit plan.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed or digital hotel confirmation for your first few nights. If staying with friends, have their contact details and address written down. Immigration rarely asks, but having it ready avoids delays.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Have access to at least $200 USD in cash or a credit card. Immigration rarely checks, but budget airlines flying into Rwanda may ask for proof of sufficient funds before boarding.Recommended
Visa-free entry is automatic
No application, no fee, no forms. Just show up with your passport. This policy applies to all Zambian passport holders for stays up to 30 days.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Kigali International Airport
After landing, follow signs to 'Immigration' or 'Arrivals'. There's a dedicated queue for visa-free nationals. Have your passport and boarding pass ready.
2
Present your passport to the immigration officer
Hand over your passport. The officer will check your validity, blank pages, and may ask for your return ticket or accommodation. Answer clearly and honestly.
3
Get your entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with a 30-day visa-free entry. No fee, no forms. The whole process takes 2-5 minutes if there's no queue.
4
Collect your luggage and exit
After immigration, proceed to baggage claim, then customs. You're free to enter Rwanda.

Frequently asked questions

No, the visa-free entry is not extendable. If you need to stay longer, you must leave Rwanda and re-enter, or apply for a different visa type before your 30 days expire. Overstaying can result in fines or deportation.
No, there is no online arrival declaration required for Zambian passport holders. You just show up at immigration with your passport. Some airlines may ask for a contact address in Rwanda — have your hotel name ready.
You will likely be denied boarding by the airline or refused entry at Kigali. The 6-month rule is strictly enforced. Renew your passport before traveling.
Yes, the same visa-free policy applies at all land borders. You'll go through immigration at the border post. Have your passport, return ticket, and accommodation details ready.
No, it's completely free. No visa application, no fee, no forms. Just your passport and a stamp.
Overstaying is taken seriously. You may be fined, detained, or banned from re-entering Rwanda. If you need more time, leave before day 30 or apply for a proper visa extension before your stay expires.
Rwanda requires proof of yellow fever vaccination if you're arriving from a country with yellow fever risk. Zambia is not on that list, so you likely won't need it. But if you've traveled to a risk country recently, carry your yellow card.
