Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa application
Apply before travel
Apply for a Suriname eVisa at the official government portal. Processing takes up to 5 business days. Print the approval letter and carry it with your passport — immigration at Johan Adolf Pengel International Airport will stamp you in.Apply for eVisaRequired
Valid passport
Must cover entire stay
Your Zambian passport needs at least one blank page for the entry stamp. Suriname does not enforce a 6-month validity rule — your passport just needs to be valid for the duration of your trip.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure
Immigration officers routinely ask for a confirmed onward ticket out of Suriname. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight booking ready. Without it, you may be denied boarding in Lusaka or at the gate in Paramaribo.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Carry a printed hotel reservation or a signed letter from your host in Suriname. Officers rarely ask, but having it avoids delays at the immigration counter.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can cover your stay
Have a bank statement or cash equivalent to roughly $50 USD per day. Immigration does not always check, but budget airlines flying into Paramaribo sometimes ask at check-in.Recommended
eVisa is mandatory
There is no visa on arrival for Zambian passport holders. You must get an eVisa before you travel. Don't show up at the airport without one.
Passport validity counts from entry date
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you enter Suriname, not from your departure date. If it expires sooner, you'll be denied boarding.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for eVisa online
Go to the official Suriname eVisa website. Fill in your personal details, passport info, and travel plans. Upload a digital passport photo and a scan of your passport bio page. Pay the fee (around $40 USD) with a credit card. Processing usually takes 3–5 business days, but can be faster.
2
Receive eVisa approval
Check your email (including spam folder) for the eVisa approval. It comes as a PDF. Print a copy and also save it on your phone. The eVisa is linked to your passport number, so you don't need to present a physical sticker.
3
Arrive at Johan Adolf Pengel International Airport (PBM)
After landing, follow signs to immigration. Have your passport, printed eVisa, return ticket, and accommodation proof ready. The officer will check your documents, stamp your passport, and you're in. The whole process usually takes 10–20 minutes if you have everything ready.
4
Exit immigration and collect luggage
After clearing immigration, head to baggage claim. Then proceed through customs (usually a green channel for most tourists). You're free to enter Suriname.

Frequently asked questions

Processing usually takes 3–5 business days. Apply at least a week before your flight to be safe. Some applications are approved in 24 hours, but don't count on it.
No, the eVisa is not extendable. You must leave before it expires. If you need more time, you'd have to apply for a different visa type from outside the country.
Rejections are rare but can happen if your documents are incomplete or your passport is too close to expiry. You can reapply with corrected information. There's no formal appeal process.
Suriname requires a yellow fever vaccination if you're arriving from a country with risk of yellow fever transmission. Zambia is not on that list, so you likely don't need it. But check with your doctor or a travel clinic before departure.
No. Zambian passport holders must have an eVisa regardless of other visas or residence permits. The eVisa is the only option.
The local currency is the Surinamese dollar (SRD). US dollars are widely accepted in hotels and larger shops, but you'll get better rates using local currency. ATMs are available in Paramaribo but may have limits. Bring some cash as backup.
Suriname is generally safe for tourists, especially in Paramaribo. Petty crime like pickpocketing can happen in crowded areas. Take normal precautions — don't flash valuables, avoid walking alone at night in unfamiliar areas.
