What happens at the border

1
Apply for a Schengen visa at the Italian embassy
Since Vatican City has no visa-issuing authority, you apply for a Schengen visa through Italy. Book an appointment at the Italian embassy or consulate in Lusaka (or the nearest one if you're abroad). Submit your application, passport, photos, travel insurance, flight itinerary, hotel booking, and bank statements. Pay the fee (€80 for adults, €40 for children 6–12, free for under-6s). Processing takes 15–30 days, so apply at least 6 weeks before your trip.
2
Travel to Vatican City
Fly into Rome (FCO or CIA), then take a train or taxi to Vatican City. At the Italian border (which is also the Schengen entry), present your passport and visa. The officer may ask for your return ticket and accommodation. Once admitted to Italy, you can walk into Vatican City freely — there are no border checks between Italy and the Vatican.
3
Enter Vatican City
There is no immigration checkpoint at the Vatican's entrance. You simply walk in from Rome. However, you must have your passport and visa with you at all times — Vatican police or Swiss Guards may ask for ID, especially near St. Peter's Square or the museums.

Processing usually takes 15–30 days. Apply at least 6 weeks before your planned travel to be safe. During peak season (summer, Easter, Christmas), it can take longer.

Overstaying a Schengen visa is a serious violation. You may be fined, banned from re-entering the Schengen area, or both. The Vatican and Italy share immigration data, so overstaying in Vatican City is treated the same as overstaying in Italy.
