Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to stay in Angola. Airlines at Harare and Victoria Falls check this before boarding. No minimum validity beyond your departure date is required by Angolan law.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Angola
Immigration officers at Quatro de Fevereiro Airport routinely ask for a confirmed onward or return ticket. Airlines also check this at check-in. Have a printed or digital copy ready.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Officers may ask where you are staying, especially if you arrive without a pre-booked hotel. A printed booking confirmation or a letter from a host in Angola covers this. Not always requested, but saves time at the desk.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Immigration can ask for evidence of sufficient funds for your stay. A bank statement or a credit card with a reasonable limit usually satisfies them. No fixed amount is published, but having around $200–$300 in cash or accessible funds is a safe bet.Recommended
Yellow fever vaccine is mandatory
Angola requires proof of yellow fever vaccination for all travellers. Get the vaccine at least 10 days before departure and carry your yellow card. No exceptions.
Visa-free for 30 days only
Your stay is limited to 30 days and cannot be extended. Plan your itinerary accordingly. If you need more time, apply for a visa before travelling.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents before travel
Check your passport has at least 6 months validity and 1 blank page. Book your return/onward ticket and first night's accommodation. Save screenshots of your booking confirmations and insurance policy on your phone.
2
Arrive at Luanda's Quatro de Fevereiro Airport (or other entry point)
At the airport, follow signs to 'Immigration' or 'Passport Control'. There are separate queues for foreigners and Angolan citizens. Join the foreigner queue.
3
Present your passport and supporting documents
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask for your return ticket and accommodation details. Answer clearly and politely. They will stamp your passport with a 30-day entry permit.
4
Collect your luggage and proceed to customs
After immigration, head to baggage claim, then customs. Declare any goods over the duty-free limit. You are now cleared to enter Angola.

Frequently asked questions

No, the visa-free entry is not extendable. If you need to stay longer, apply for a visa or residence permit before your 30 days expire. Overstaying can result in fines or deportation.
Yes, Angola requires a yellow fever vaccination certificate for all travellers over 9 months old. Get the vaccine at least 10 days before travel and carry the International Certificate of Vaccination (yellow card). Without it, you may be denied entry or quarantined.
You will likely be denied boarding by your airline or refused entry at the border. Renew your passport before travelling. The 6-month rule is strictly enforced.
Yes, the visa-free policy applies to all entry points — airports and land borders. However, land border crossings may have less predictable hours and facilities. Stick to major crossings like the one at the Democratic Republic of Congo border.
The local currency is the Angolan kwanza (AOA). US dollars are widely accepted in Luanda, but you will get better rates using local currency. ATMs are available in cities but may have withdrawal limits. Bring some cash in USD as backup.
Angola is generally safe for travellers, but petty crime like pickpocketing and bag snatching occurs in Luanda. Avoid walking alone at night, do not flash valuables, and use registered taxis. The visa-free policy does not change safety considerations.
No, there is no online arrival declaration required for Angola. You will fill out a standard immigration card on the plane or at the airport upon arrival.
