Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for entire stay in Finland
Your passport needs to be valid for the whole time you're in Finland. Schengen rules don't require 6 months beyond departure, but your airline might enforce it — check with them before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Schengen area
Border officers at Helsinki Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket showing you'll leave the Schengen zone within 90 days. Have a printed or digital copy ready.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Immigration may ask where you're staying. A hotel confirmation or a letter from your host with their address works fine.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient money for your stay
You might be asked to show you can support yourself — roughly €50–€100 per day. A bank statement or credit card usually satisfies the officer.Recommended
Border officers can deny entry even without a visa
Visa-free access doesn't guarantee entry. Officers at Helsinki Airport can refuse entry if they suspect you'll overstay, work illegally, or can't support yourself. Always carry proof of funds, a return ticket, and accommodation details.
90/180-day rule applies across all Schengen countries
Your 90-day visa-free allowance is for the entire Schengen area, not just Finland. Days spent in France, Germany, or any other Schengen country count toward the same 90-day limit. Track your days carefully — overstaying in any Schengen country affects your entire Schengen travel history.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare documents before departure
Gather your passport (valid 6+ months from entry), return ticket, hotel booking or host invitation, and proof of funds. Save digital copies on your phone and print backups. Book travel insurance and an eSIM for convenience.
2
Arrive at Helsinki-Vantaa Airport (HEL)
Most flights from UAE land at Helsinki-Vantaa. Follow signs to 'Passport Control' for non-EU citizens. Queues vary — expect 15–45 minutes during peak hours (morning and early afternoon).
3
Present documents at border control
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask: purpose of visit, length of stay, where you're staying, and your return date. Answer clearly and concisely. Have your return ticket and accommodation proof ready if asked.
4
Receive entry stamp
If approved, you'll get an entry stamp in your passport showing the date of entry. This stamp is your proof of legal stay. Keep it safe — you'll need it when leaving.
5
Collect luggage and exit
After passport control, proceed to baggage claim, then customs. Green channel for most travellers (nothing to declare). Exit into the arrivals hall.

No. The visa-free stay is not extendable for tourism. If you need to stay longer, you must apply for a residence permit (e.g., work, study, family) before your 90 days expire. Overstaying results in fines of €100 per day and can affect future Schengen travel.
You'll be fined €100 per day (approx. $110 USD) for each day over the limit. Overstays are recorded in the Schengen Information System and can lead to a ban from the Schengen area. Avoid it at all costs.

No. The visa-free stay is for tourism, business meetings, and family visits only. You cannot work for a Finnish employer or perform paid work. No vaccines are required for entry. However, routine vaccines (MMR, DTaP, polio) are recommended. Hepatitis A and B are also recommended. If you plan to hike or spend time in forests, consider the tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) vaccine — ticks are common in summer and can carry Lyme disease or TBE.
For stays beyond 90 days, you need a residence permit.
