Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must cover your entire stay in Japan
Japan does not require 6 months of passport validity beyond your departure date — your passport just needs to be valid for the whole stay. Airlines sometimes enforce the 6-month rule anyway, so check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Japan
Immigration officers at Narita, Haneda, and Kansai ask for a return or onward ticket on arrival. Enforcement varies by officer — some wave you through, others check every passenger. Have a printed or digital copy ready to avoid delays.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Immigration rarely asks for hotel bookings, but budget airlines and some check-in counters request them. Keep a printed confirmation or a screenshot on your phone.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Officers rarely ask for bank statements, but if they do, show at least ¥100,000 (roughly $700 USD) or a credit card with a visible limit. Carry a mix of cash and card — Japan is still cash-heavy in smaller towns.Recommended
Visit Japan Web pre-registrationJapan's digital pre-arrival registration at vjw-lp.digital.go.jp. Enter passport details, flight info, and customs declaration. You get a QR code that lets you use the fast lane at Narita, Haneda, and Kansai.
Digital arrival and customs form
Register at vjw-lp.digital.go.jp before your flight — enter your passport details, flight info, and customs declaration. You get a QR code that lets you use the fast lane at Narita, Haneda, and Kansai. Completely optional but saves 10–20 minutes at immigration.Register on Visit Japan WebOptional
Visit Japan Web Saves Time
Registering on Visit Japan Web before your flight lets you skip the paper arrival card and customs form. You'll get a QR code to scan at immigration kiosks in Narita, Haneda, Kansai, Chubu, and other major airports. It's free and takes 10 minutes.
Passport Validity Is Strictly Enforced
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the date you enter Japan. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you won't be allowed to board. Renew early if needed.

What happens at the border

1
Before You Fly: Check Passport Validity
Make sure your passport has at least 6 months of validity left from your entry date. Also check you have at least one blank page for the entry stamp.
2
Book Return/Onward Ticket
Book a flight out of Japan within 30 days of arrival. Keep the booking confirmation easily accessible — you'll need it at check-in and possibly at immigration.
3
Register on Visit Japan Web (Optional)
Go to https://vjw-lp.digital.go.jp and fill in your passport details, flight info, and accommodation. You'll get a QR code that lets you use the fast lane at immigration in major airports like Narita, Haneda, Kansai, and Chubu.
4
Arrival at Japanese Airport
After landing, follow signs to 'Arrivals' and then 'Foreign Passports'. Have your passport and (if you registered) QR code ready. If you didn't register, fill out the paper arrival card and customs declaration form (available on the plane or at the counter).
5
Immigration Interview
Hand over your passport and any forms. The officer may ask: purpose of visit, length of stay, where you're staying, and when you're leaving. Answer clearly. They'll take your photo and fingerprints (both index fingers). You'll get a landing permission sticker in your passport.
6
Collect Luggage and Clear Customs
After immigration, collect your bags from the carousel. Proceed to customs — if you have nothing to declare, use the green channel. If you registered on Visit Japan Web, scan your QR code at the customs kiosk.
