Visa on arrival
Visa on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport
You get a visa on arrival at Kathmandu airport. Fill in the arrival form, pay the fee in cash (USD, EUR, or NPR), and hand over two passport photos. The standard tourist visa costs $30 for 15 days, $50 for 30 days, and $125 for 90 days.Check visa infoRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your stay
Your passport needs at least 6 months of validity from your date of entry. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for visa on arrival
Immigration officers at Kathmandu airport ask for a confirmed onward or return ticket before granting the visa on arrival. Have a printed copy or a digital version on your phone ready.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or trekking permit
You do not need to show a hotel booking at immigration, but having one speeds things up. If you are trekking, you need a TIMS card and a trekking permit — arrange those in Kathmandu.Recommended
Proof of funds
Cash or card for daily expenses
Immigration rarely asks for proof of funds, but carry enough cash (USD or NPR) for your stay. ATMs are common in cities but unreliable in remote areas. Budget at least $30–$50 per day for food, transport, and accommodation.Recommended
Cash only for visa fee
The visa-on-arrival counter at Tribhuvan International Airport only accepts cash (USD, EUR, or NPR). ATMs are located after immigration, so you can't withdraw money to pay the fee. Bring small bills — $20s and $50s work best.
Photo booth available, but bring your own
There's a photo booth at the airport near the visa counter, but it can be slow and the queue builds up. Bringing your own passport photo saves 10-15 minutes.

What happens at the border

1
Fill out the arrival form
On the plane or at the airport, grab a 'Visa on Arrival' form. Fill in your details: name, passport number, flight number, hotel address, and duration of stay.
2
Queue at the visa counter
After landing at Tribhuvan International Airport, follow signs to 'Visa on Arrival'. There are two queues: one for payment (cash only), then another for visa issuance. Pay the fee in USD, EUR, or NPR.
3
Get your visa sticker
Hand over your form, passport, and payment receipt. The officer will stick the visa in your passport and stamp it. You're then free to proceed to immigration.
4
Pass through immigration
Show your passport with the visa sticker to the immigration officer. They may ask your purpose of visit and where you're staying. Answer clearly. Then collect your bags and exit.

Frequently asked questions

As of 2026, the fee is: 15 days — $30 USD, 30 days — $50 USD, 90 days — $125 USD. You can pay in USD, EUR, or NPR. Credit cards are not accepted at the visa counter.
Yes, you can extend your visa at the Department of Immigration in Kathmandu (near the airport) or at immigration offices in Pokhara and Chitwan. Extensions cost about $3 USD per day for up to 15 days, then $2 USD per day for additional days. Maximum total stay is 150 days per calendar year.
If you're staying airside and not leaving the transit area, you don't need a visa. But if you plan to exit the airport (e.g., for a long layover), you'll need a visa on arrival.
Visa on arrival is also available at major land border crossings with India (e.g., Sunauli, Raxaul, Kakarbhitta) and with China (Kodari). The same fees and requirements apply. However, the process can be slower — bring extra patience.
Yes, Nepal offers an e-visa system (nepalimmigration.gov.np). You can apply online, pay the fee, and receive an approval letter. Print it and bring it with you. At the airport, you'll still need to queue at the 'e-Visa' counter to get the sticker. It saves time filling out the form, but not much else.
You will be denied boarding by the airline and denied entry by Nepal immigration. No exceptions. Renew your passport before traveling.
Yes, an onward ticket (flight out of Nepal to any other country) is sufficient. It proves you're not staying indefinitely. A bus ticket to India is also accepted, but a flight is cleaner.
