Nepal customs rules & duty-free allowances

Last reviewed July 2, 2026·Official source

Nepal strictly enforces rules on religious artifacts and cash. Importing idols, statues, or antiques without a permit from the Department of Archaeology can lead to seizure and fines. Always declare cash over NPR 500,000 (approx. USD 3,800) or foreign currency over USD 5,000.

Arriving: red vs green channel

After collecting luggage, proceed to the customs area. Use the green channel if you have nothing to declare. Use the red channel and submit a Customs Declaration Form (CDF) if you have goods exceeding the duty-free limit, cash over NPR 500,000 or USD 5,000, or restricted items. Officers may randomly inspect bags.

Tax-free shopping & VAT refunds

Nepal does not offer a tourist VAT refund scheme for goods purchased locally.

Bringing medication

Personal medications for up to 30 days are allowed without a prescription. For longer courses or controlled substances (e.g., narcotics, psychotropics), carry a doctor's prescription and a letter from the hospital. Codeine-containing painkillers require prior approval from the Department of Drug Administration.

Food, plants & animal products

All food, plants, seeds, and animal products must be declared. Fresh fruits, vegetables, meat, and dairy are generally prohibited without a phytosanitary certificate. Processed and packaged foods for personal use are allowed in small quantities.

Rules worth knowing

Religious items and antiques

Bringing in religious statues, idols, or antiques without a permit from the Department of Archaeology can result in confiscation and legal action. Even small souvenirs that look old may be questioned.

Cash declaration threshold

You must declare any amount exceeding NPR 500,000 (approx. USD 3,800) in local currency or USD 5,000 in foreign currency. Failure to declare can lead to seizure and penalties.

Duty-free for personal effects

Used personal effects (clothing, toiletries, electronics for personal use) are generally duty-free. New items or gifts valued over USD 800 are subject to duty and VAT.
