Visa on arrival
Visa on arrival
Get your visa at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu or at land border crossings. Fill out the arrival form on the plane or at the counter, pay the fee in cash (USD, EUR, or NPR), and hand over two passport photos. The 15-day visa costs $30 USD, 30-day costs $50 USD, and 90-day costs $125 USD.Check visa feesRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your stay
Your passport needs at least 6 months of validity from your arrival date in Nepal. Airlines check this before boarding, and immigration at Kathmandu enforces it strictly. If your passport expires sooner, renew it before you travel.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Nepal
Immigration officers at Kathmandu airport ask for a confirmed onward or return ticket before issuing your visa on arrival. Have a printed copy or a digital version on your phone ready. If you're overlanding to India, show your bus or train booking.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or trekking permit
Immigration rarely asks for a hotel booking, but having one speeds things up if they do. If you're trekking, your TIMS card or trekking permit serves as proof of your itinerary. Carry a printed copy of your first night's reservation.Recommended
Proof of funds
Cash or card for daily expenses
You don't need to show a bank statement, but carry enough cash for your stay — ATMs in Kathmandu work but can run out of rupees. Budget around $30–$50 USD per day for food, transport, and accommodation. USD, EUR, and GBP are easy to exchange at forex counters.Recommended
Visa on arrival only at designated entry points
Most US travelers fly into Kathmandu's Tribhuvan International Airport where the process is smooth. Land border crossings that offer visa on arrival: Kakarbhitta, Birgunj, Bhairahawa, Nepalgunj, and Dhangadi. Some close at 17:00 or earlier – check hours.
Cash is king at immigration
The visa fee must be paid in cash. Credit cards are not accepted. US dollars are easiest, but they also accept Euros, British Pounds, Australian Dollars, and some other major currencies. Non-USD exchange rates may be less favorable. Have exact change ready to avoid delays.

What happens at the border

1
Fill out the arrival card and visa form
On the flight you'll get a Nepalese arrival card. Fill it with personal info, flight number, and address in Nepal. After landing, go to the 'Visa on Arrival' counters. Use the free kiosks to enter your details and get a printed receipt, or fill out a paper form. The kiosks are faster.
2
Pay the visa fee
Take the completed form and your passport to the payment counter. Pay in USD cash (or EUR, GBP, etc.). They'll give you a receipt. Keep it.
3
Get the visa sticker
Go to the immigration counter with your receipt, form, and passport. The officer will check everything, take your photo, and stamp the visa sticker into your passport. This takes about 2–5 minutes. Then collect your luggage and exit.
