Airlines enforce onward ticket — even if immigration doesn't
You might not need a return ticket for immigration, but every airline flying to Sri Lanka requires you to show proof of onward travel before boarding. If you don't have a return or onward flight, you'll be denied boarding at your departure airport. Make sure you have one, even if it's refundable.
Visa on arrival vs. ETA: which is better?
For US citizens, the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) is cheaper ($20 vs $35) and faster (no queue at arrival). You can apply online up to 3 months before travel. If you have time before the trip, get the ETA. Otherwise, visa on arrival works fine but may involve a 15-30 minute wait at the counter.

Arrive at the Visa on Arrival counter

Complete the arrival form
Fill out the blue landing card (given on the plane or at the counter). You'll need your flight number, passport details, and address in Sri Lanka. Hand it to the visa counter officer.

Pay the fee and receive the visa sticker
Pay the fee (cash USD or card) at the counter. The officer will issue a visa sticker valid for 30 days and affix it to a blank page in your passport.
