Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the entire stay
Your passport must be valid for the entire duration of your stay in Austria. Schengen rules do not require 6 months beyond departure, but your airline may enforce it — check with them before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Schengen area
Immigration officers at Vienna and other Schengen entry points routinely ask for a return or onward ticket showing you leave the Schengen zone within 90 days. Budget airlines check this at check-in too.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Have a hotel reservation, hostel booking, or a letter from your host ready. Officers rarely ask, but if they do, a printed booking confirmation or a screenshot on your phone works.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Carry a bank statement or credit card showing you have enough money for your stay. No set amount is published, but around €100 per day is a safe benchmark. I've never been asked, but it's better to have it.Recommended
Schengen 90/180 rule applies
Your 90-day visa-free stay counts across all 27 Schengen countries, not just Austria. Keep track of your days — use the Schengen calculator app. Overstaying even by a day can cause serious problems.
Register if staying with friends or family
If you're not in a hotel, you must register at the local Meldeamt within 3 days. Your host can help. Failure to register can result in a fine of up to €500.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents before travel
Print or save digital copies of your passport, return ticket, accommodation booking, and insurance. Keep them in a folder on your phone and a physical backup in your bag.
2
Arrive at the airport in Austria
You'll go through passport control at Vienna International Airport (VIE) or any other Schengen entry point. The officer will check your passport, ask about your trip purpose and length of stay, and stamp your passport.
3
Show your return ticket if asked
Have your onward ticket ready on your phone or printed. They rarely ask, but if they do, you need to show it immediately.
4
Collect your luggage and exit
After passport control, head to baggage claim, then customs (green channel for most tourists). You're free to enter Austria.

Frequently asked questions

No. You can enter visa-free for up to 90 days within any 180-day period for tourism, business, or family visits.
No. The 90-day limit is strict for the entire Schengen area. Overstaying can result in fines, deportation, or a ban. If you need to stay longer, you must apply for a national visa (e.g., work or study) before your 90 days expire.
You'll be denied boarding by the airline or entry by border control. Renew your passport before traveling.
If you stay longer than 3 days, you must register at the local Meldeamt (registration office) within 3 days of arrival. Hotels usually do this for you. If staying with friends or in a private rental, you need to do it yourself.
Not strictly for visa-free travelers, but it's strongly recommended. If you're asked to prove you can cover medical costs, having insurance helps. Without it, a hospital visit could cost you thousands.
Yes. Austria is part of the Schengen Area. You can enter via Germany, Italy, or any other Schengen country. The 90-day limit applies to the entire Schengen zone, not just Austria.
Overstaying is a violation of Schengen rules. You may face a fine (up to €5,000), deportation, and a ban from re-entering the Schengen Area for up to 5 years. Don't risk it.
