Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa application
Apply online before travel
Apply at the official Vietnam eVisa portal at evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn. The fee is $25 USD for single entry or $50 USD for multiple entry, valid for up to 90 days. Processing takes 3 working days — do not book flights until approved.Apply for eVisaRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for entire stay
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended departure date from Vietnam. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Vietnam
Immigration officers routinely ask for a confirmed onward or return flight out of Vietnam. Have a printed or digital copy of your ticket ready — they may deny entry if you cannot show one.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed hotel reservation or an invitation letter from your host. Immigration may ask for your first night's address when you arrive.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can cover your stay
Officers may ask to see cash, credit cards, or bank statements. Have at least $500 USD equivalent available per person for a short trip.Recommended
eVisa is single entry only
The eVisa allows one entry. If you leave Vietnam (even for a day trip to Cambodia), you'll need a new visa to re-enter.
Check your passport validity carefully
Count 6 months from the day you land in Vietnam, not your departure date. If your passport expires sooner, renew it before applying for the eVisa.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for eVisa online
Go to the official Vietnam eVisa website (evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn). Fill in your personal details, passport info, and travel plans. Upload a passport photo and a scan of your passport data page. Pay the fee (around $25 USD) by credit card. You'll get a confirmation email with a reference code.
2
Wait for approval
Processing takes 3-5 working days. Check your email (including spam) for the approval letter. It comes as a PDF with your photo and details. Print it or save it offline on your phone.
3
Arrive at Vietnam airport
At Hanoi (Noi Bai), Ho Chi Minh City (Tan Son Nhat), or Da Nang airport, head to the immigration counter. Have your passport, printed eVisa (or phone), and return ticket ready. The officer will stamp you in — usually takes 2-5 minutes.
4
Show onward ticket if asked
Immigration may ask for your return or onward ticket. Have a screenshot or printed copy handy. They rarely ask, but it's better to be prepared.
