Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the entire stay in Hungary
Your Austrian passport just needs to be valid for the whole time you're in Hungary. No minimum validity beyond departure is required by Hungarian law, but airlines sometimes enforce 3 months — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from the Schengen area
Border officers at Budapest Airport regularly ask for a return or onward ticket showing you'll leave the Schengen zone within 90 days. Have a printed or digital copy ready — they've checked it on every one of my entries.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Keep a copy of your hotel reservation or a letter from your host. Officers rarely ask for it, but when they do, they want to see an address and contact number in Hungary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during the stay
Have a bank statement or credit card ready showing you have enough for your trip. Hungary doesn't publish a fixed minimum, but around €100 per day is a safe benchmark if asked.Recommended
Schengen Area rules apply
Your 90-day limit counts across all Schengen countries, not just Hungary. If you've already spent time in France or Germany earlier in the year, that time counts toward your total.
Passport validity is critical
Even though you don't need a visa, your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your entry date. Airlines check this before boarding. If your passport expires sooner, renew it before you travel.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents
Before you leave, check your passport validity (6+ months from entry), book your return/onward ticket, and arrange accommodation for your first night. Save digital copies on your phone.
2
Arrive at Budapest Airport or border
At Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport (BUD) or any land border crossing, join the 'All Passports' or 'EU/EEA' queue. Since you're Austrian, you can use the EU lane.
3
Present your passport
Hand over your passport to the border officer. They may ask about the purpose of your visit, how long you're staying, and where you're staying. Answer clearly and briefly.
4
Receive entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the entry date. This stamp records your entry into the Schengen Area. Keep your passport safe.
5
Collect luggage and exit
After the stamp, proceed to baggage claim (if you checked bags), then exit into the arrivals hall. No further checks unless you have something to declare.
