Austrian passport holders can visit Japan for up to 90 days without a visa in 2026. No application or fee is needed before travel — just show up with a valid passport and a return ticket. This covers tourism, business meetings, and short-term visits.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for your entire stay in Japan
Japan does not require 6 months of passport validity beyond your departure date — just enough to cover your stay. Airlines sometimes enforce the 6-month rule anyway, so check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Japan
Immigration officers at Narita and Haneda ask for a return or onward ticket more often than not. Have a printed or digital copy of your outbound flight ready — enforcement varies by officer, but it's safer to have it.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Immigration rarely asks for hotel bookings, but budget airlines and some check-in counters do. Carry a printed or digital confirmation of your first night's stay just in case.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Officers almost never ask for bank statements for short tourist visits, but having a credit card and a few hundred euros in cash covers you. No specific minimum amount is published for Japanese immigration.Recommended

Visit Japan Web saves time
Pre-register your arrival details at https://vjw-lp.digital.go.jp to get a QR code. At major airports like Narita and Haneda, this lets you skip the paper landing card queue. It's free and takes 5 minutes.
Overstaying is serious
Staying beyond 90 days without a visa extension is illegal. Penalties include fines up to ¥300,000, detention, deportation, and a ban from re-entering Japan for up to 5 years. Set a calendar reminder to leave on time.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare documents before departure
Check your passport is valid for 6+ months from entry. Book a return/onward ticket and first night accommodation. Optionally register on Visit Japan Web (vjw-lp.digital.go.jp) to get a QR code.
2
Arrive at Japanese airport
At Narita, Haneda, Kansai, or any other international airport, follow signs to 'Foreign Passports'. Have your passport, return ticket (screenshot or print), and accommodation confirmation ready.
3
Go through immigration
Hand over your passport and any requested documents. If you registered on Visit Japan Web, show the QR code. The officer will take your photo and fingerprints, then stamp your passport. You'll get a landing permission sticker valid for up to 90 days.
4
Collect luggage and exit
After immigration, pick up your bags from the carousel, then proceed through customs. If you have nothing to declare, use the green channel. Keep your passport handy — customs may ask to see it.

Frequently asked questions

No. The visa-free stay is strictly 90 days and cannot be extended. You must leave Japan before the 90th day. Overstaying can result in fines up to ¥300,000, detention, deportation, or a ban from re-entering Japan for up to 5 years.
You will be denied boarding by the airline and refused entry by Japanese immigration. Renew your passport before traveling. If you have a valid Austrian passport with at least 6 months validity from your entry date, you're fine.
No. The 90-day visa-free stay covers business meetings, conferences, and short-term work that doesn't involve being paid in Japan. If you plan to work for a Japanese company or receive payment from a Japanese source, you need a work visa.
The airline may refuse to let you board, and immigration can deny entry. Always have a confirmed onward or return ticket. A refundable ticket is fine — just cancel it after arrival if your plans change.
No, it's optional. But it saves time at immigration because you pre-submit your details and get a QR code. Without it, you fill out a paper landing card on the plane or at the airport. Both work.
Each entry resets the 90-day clock. You can leave and re-enter Japan on the same day, but immigration may question frequent back-to-back visits. For genuine tourism, it's fine.
Report the loss to the nearest police station and get a police report. Then contact the Austrian Embassy in Tokyo (or consulate in Osaka) for an emergency travel document. You'll need the police report and a passport photo. Processing takes 1-3 business days.
