Australians can visit Georgia visa-free for up to 360 days. The key rule: your passport must be valid for at least 6 months after your departure date. That's the main thing to check before you go.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Australian passport only needs to be valid for the period you plan to stay in Georgia. Georgia does not enforce the 6-month validity rule. Airlines may still ask for at least 3 months validity — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Georgia
Immigration officers at Tbilisi and Kutaisi airports routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight booking ready. A bus or train ticket to a neighboring country also works.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Border officers rarely ask for accommodation proof, but having a hotel confirmation or a letter from a host speeds things up. If you're staying with friends, a simple invitation with their address and phone number is enough.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Georgia does not publish a minimum cash requirement, but carrying a credit card and a few hundred GEL in cash (or equivalent in USD/EUR) covers any spontaneous questions. ATMs are widely available in Tbilisi and Batumi.Recommended
Registration for stays over 30 days
If you plan to stay in Georgia for more than 30 days, you must register your address with the Public Service Hall within the first 30 days. It's free and can be done at any branch (Tbilisi, Batumi, Kutaisi). Bring your passport and proof of accommodation. Failing to register can result in a fine of up to 300 GEL.
Don't overstay — it's costly
The 360-day limit is generous, but overstaying even a day can lead to fines and a ban. Mark your departure date clearly and plan to leave a few days early to avoid any issues.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at the border
Whether you fly into Tbilisi International Airport, Kutaisi, or Batumi, or cross by land from Turkey, Armenia, Azerbaijan, or Russia (Gudauri/Kazbegi), proceed to the passport control line for foreign citizens.
2
Present your passport
Hand over your Australian passport. The officer will scan it, check its validity, and stamp it with the date of entry. No forms needed.
3
Receive entry stamp
You'll get a clear entry stamp showing the date. That stamp marks the start of your 360-day visa-free stay. No onward ticket or proof of funds is asked for, but have them ready just in case.

Frequently asked questions

No. The visa-free entry allows a maximum stay of 360 days. No extensions are possible. You must leave Georgia before the 360 days end. After that, you must stay outside Georgia for 90 days before you can re-enter visa-free.
Overstaying is taken seriously. You will be fined 600 GEL (about AUD 300) if you overstay by up to 30 days. For longer overstays, fines increase and you may be banned from re-entering Georgia for a period. Always set a reminder to leave on time.
No. Visa-free entry is for tourism, business meetings, and short-term visits only. If you want to work, study, or volunteer, you need a relevant visa or permit arranged before you arrive.
No, it is not required by Georgian law. However, the airline might ask for proof of onward travel before boarding. Check with your carrier — some require a ticket out of Georgia within the visa-free period.
Yes, you can leave and re-enter Georgia as many times as you like within the 360 days, as long as you don't exceed 360 days total in any 360-day period. Each entry does not reset the counter — it's cumulative. If you leave for a week and come back, that week outside doesn't extend your stay limit.
You will be denied entry. The border officer strictly enforces the 6-month validity rule. If your passport is damaged (e.g., torn pages, water damage) you may also be refused. Get a new passport before traveling.
