Australian passport holders need an eVisa to enter Myanmar. The eVisa covers tourism and business visits, and you apply online before you travel. As of 2026, the process is straightforward, but your passport must be valid for at least six months from your date of entry.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa application
Apply for Myanmar eVisa
Apply online at the official Myanmar eVisa portal before travel. Processing takes 3-5 working days, and the visa is valid for 90 days from issue. Print the approval letter and carry it with your passport — immigration at Yangon, Mandalay, and Naypyidaw airports will stamp the visa on arrival.Apply for eVisaRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for 6 months beyond stay
Your Australian passport must have at least 6 months of validity remaining from your date of entry into Myanmar. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure
Immigration officers routinely ask for a confirmed onward or return ticket. A printed itinerary or e-ticket showing your departure from Myanmar within the eVisa validity period works. Without one, you may be refused entry.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Have a printed hotel reservation or a letter of invitation from your host ready. Immigration may ask for your first night's address — a booking confirmation with the hotel name and address is sufficient.Recommended
Proof of funds
Cash or bank statement
Carry at least $300 USD in cash or a bank statement showing sufficient funds for your stay. ATMs are available in major cities but unreliable outside Yangon and Mandalay. Immigration rarely asks, but having cash avoids problems.Recommended
eVisa is not extendable
The eVisa cannot be extended. If you overstay, you'll be fined $3 USD per day at immigration when you leave. Plan your trip within the eVisa's validity.
Keep a printed copy of your eVisa
Immigration officers at the airport will ask for the printed approval letter. A digital copy on your phone is not accepted. Print it before you leave home.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for the eVisa online
Go to the official Myanmar eVisa website at evisa.moip.gov.mm. Fill in your personal details, passport info, and travel dates. Upload a digital passport photo (white background, recent). Pay the fee with a credit card. You'll get a confirmation email with a reference number.
2
Wait for approval
Processing takes 3–5 business days. Check your email (including spam) for the approval letter. The letter is a PDF with your photo and a barcode. Print it out — you'll need the physical copy at immigration.
3
Prepare your documents for departure
Before you leave for the airport, gather: your printed eVisa approval, passport (valid 6+ months), return/onward ticket (printed or screenshot), and first night hotel booking. Keep them in your carry-on.
4
Arrive at Yangon, Mandalay, or Naypyidaw airport
Most international flights land at Yangon International Airport. Follow signs to 'Immigration'. Hand over your passport, eVisa printout, and boarding pass. The officer will stamp you in. It usually takes 10–20 minutes.
5
Collect your luggage and exit
After immigration, pick up your bags from the carousel. Then proceed to customs. There's usually a green channel for nothing to declare. Keep your hotel address handy in case asked.
