Myanmar customs rules & duty-free allowances

Last reviewed July 2, 2026·Official source

Myanmar's strictest customs risk is the ban on exporting local currency and the requirement to declare all foreign cash over USD 10,000 on arrival. Drones and satellite phones are prohibited without prior government approval, and items deemed harmful to culture or security are banned.

Arriving: red vs green channel

Upon arrival, proceed to the Customs Declaration area. If you have nothing to declare or goods within the duty-free limits, use the green channel. If you have goods exceeding the allowance, restricted items, or cash over USD 10,000, use the red channel and submit a Customs Declaration Form (CDF-1).

Bringing medication

Personal medications for up to 30 days' supply are allowed with a valid prescription. Controlled substances (e.g., opioids, psychotropics) require prior approval from the Myanmar Food and Drug Administration. Some common Western medications like codeine-containing painkillers are banned without a permit.

Food, plants & animal products

All food, plants, seeds, and animal products must be declared. Meat, dairy, and fresh produce are generally prohibited unless accompanied by a phytosanitary certificate. Import of pork and pork products is banned due to African swine fever restrictions.

Rules worth knowing

Foreign Currency Export Ban

It is illegal to export Myanmar kyat (MMK). Foreign currency up to USD 10,000 can be taken out; any amount above must be declared on arrival and may require a permit from the Central Bank of Myanmar.

Drones and Satellite Phones

Importing drones or satellite phones requires prior approval from the Ministry of Transport and Communications. Unauthorized possession can lead to confiscation and fines.
