Apply early — no exceptions
There's no visa-on-arrival for US citizens. If you show up without an approved e-visa, you'll be sent back. Apply at least a week in advance, and don't rely on 'express' options — they're not guaranteed.
Only air entry with e-visa
The e-visa is only valid for arrival by air at Yangon, Mandalay, or Naypyidaw. If you're planning to cross by land from Thailand or elsewhere, you'll need a different visa — check with the nearest Myanmar embassy.
Keep your e-visa printed
Print the approval letter and keep it with your passport. You'll need it at airline check-in and at immigration. A digital copy on your phone is a good backup, but don't rely on it alone.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for the e-visa online
Go to https://evisa.moip.gov.mm/ and fill out the application. You'll need your passport details, a digital passport photo, and your travel dates. Pay the fee with a credit or debit card. Processing typically takes 3–5 business days, but apply at least a week before your trip to be safe.
2
Receive your e-visa approval
You'll get an email with your e-visa approval letter. Print it out — you'll need a physical copy to show at airline check-in and at Myanmar immigration. Keep a digital backup on your phone too.
3
Arrive at the airport in Myanmar
When you land at Yangon (RGN), Mandalay (MDL), or Naypyidaw (NYT), follow signs to 'Visa on Arrival' or 'E-Visa' lanes. Present your passport, printed e-visa, and boarding pass. The officer will check your details, take your fingerprints, and stamp you in. Expect it to take 15–30 minutes depending on queues.
4
Proceed through immigration and baggage claim
After the stamp, collect your bags and exit through customs. Keep your passport and e-visa handy — you may be asked to show them again at the exit.

However, due to limited facilities, most passengers are required to clear immigration and re-check in.

Exceptions & conditions
  • Passengers with a confirmed onward ticket and who do not leave the international transit area may be allowed to stay airside for up to 24 hours, but this is at the discretion of immigration officials and not guaranteed.

Frequently asked questions

Officially 3–5 business days, but it can be faster. Apply at least a week before your trip to avoid stress. The fee is paid online at the time of application.
No, not for US citizens. You must have an approved e-visa before you arrive. There's no visa-on-arrival facility for tourism at Myanmar airports.
The e-visa allows a stay of up to 28 days. It's not extendable, so if you want to stay longer, you'd need to leave and re-enter or apply for a different visa type.
You'll be denied boarding by the airline and entry by Myanmar immigration. Renew your passport before applying for the e-visa — the e-visa is tied to your passport number.
Yes, it's a standard requirement. Airlines usually check it at check-in, and immigration may ask. Have a printed copy or be ready to show it on your phone.
No, the e-visa is only valid for entry by air at Yangon, Mandalay, or Naypyidaw international airports. If you plan to enter overland, you need a different visa arrangement.
You'll get an email explaining the reason. You can reapply, but you'll need to pay the fee again. Double-check your passport details and photo before submitting to avoid mistakes.
