Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your stay
Your passport needs at least 6 months of validity from your entry date into Brazil. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you'll be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Brazil
Immigration officers routinely ask for a return or onward ticket within your 90-day visa-free period. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight booking ready — budget airlines sometimes check this at the gate too.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed or digital hotel reservation for at least the first few nights. If staying with friends, a simple invitation letter with their address and phone number works — I've been asked for this at GRU immigration twice.Recommended
Proof of funds
Bank statement or credit card
Immigration can ask how you'll support yourself during your stay. A recent bank statement showing a few thousand BRL equivalent, or a credit card with available limit, is usually enough. I've never been asked, but it's better to have it.Recommended
Passport validity counts from entry, not departure
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you arrive in Brazil. If it expires sooner, renew it before you go — even if you plan to leave before it expires.
Overstaying is costly
If you stay beyond 90 days, you'll face a fine of roughly R$100 per day and a re-entry ban equal to the overstay period. Set a reminder to leave on time.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents before departure
Check your passport validity (6+ months from entry date). Print or save digital copies of your return ticket, first night accommodation, and travel insurance. Download an eSIM or buy a local SIM at the airport.
2
Arrive at a Brazilian international airport
You'll land at one of the main airports: Guarulhos (GRU) in São Paulo, Galeão (GIG) in Rio de Janeiro, or Brasília (BSB). Follow signs to 'Passport Control' or 'Immigration'.
3
Queue at the immigration counter
Join the line for 'Foreign Passports'. Have your passport and return ticket ready. The officer will stamp your passport and may ask your purpose of visit and length of stay.
4
Receive your entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the date of entry and the maximum stay (usually 90 days). Check the stamp before leaving the counter.
5
Collect baggage and exit
After immigration, proceed to baggage claim, then customs. If you have nothing to declare, use the green channel. You're now free to enter Brazil.
