Entry requirements

Visa on arrival
Visa on arrival
Get a visa on arrival at Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR), Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), and other designated entry points. Have $50 USD in cash for a single-entry tourist visa (up to 90 days). The visa counter takes 10–15 minutes — keep your passport photo ready.Apply onlineRequired
Valid passport
Original passport
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your arrival date. Airlines check this before boarding — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of onward travel
Immigration officers routinely ask for a confirmed onward ticket out of Tanzania. Have a printed or digital copy of your return flight or a bus/ferry ticket to a neighboring country.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Carry a printed hotel confirmation or a letter from your host in Tanzania. Officers at DAR and JRO sometimes ask for it, especially if you arrive without a pre-booked tour.Recommended
Proof of funds
Cash or bank statement
Have at least $200 USD in cash or a recent bank statement showing sufficient funds. Officers rarely check this for Belgian passport holders, but it helps if asked.Recommended
Cash only — no cards
The visa-on-arrival counter only accepts US dollars in cash. There are ATMs after immigration, but you'll need cash before that. Bring $50–$100 USD in crisp, new bills.
E-visa option available
If you want to skip the visa-on-arrival queue, apply for an e-visa online before you travel. It costs the same ($50 USD) and takes 3–10 business days. Use the official Tanzania immigration website.

What happens at the border

1
Fill out the arrival form
On the plane, you'll receive a Tanzania arrival card. Fill it out in blue or black ink. Keep it with your passport.
2
Queue at Visa on Arrival counter
After deplaning at Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR) or Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO), follow signs to 'Visa on Arrival'. There's usually a separate queue for visa applicants. Have your passport, arrival card, and cash ready.
3
Pay the fee and receive your visa
Hand over your passport and $50 USD. The officer will process payment, then affix the visa sticker. This takes 5–10 minutes if the line is short.
4
Proceed to immigration control
With your visa sticker, join the main immigration queue. Present your passport, visa, and arrival card. The officer may ask about your stay and return ticket.
5
Collect your luggage and exit
After passport control, collect your bags from the carousel and proceed through customs. You're now in Tanzania.

Frequently asked questions

The single-entry tourist visa costs $50 USD. You must pay in cash — no credit cards. Bring crisp, newer bills. Old or damaged notes may be refused.
No. The visa on arrival is not extendable. If you need to stay longer than 90 days, you must apply for a different visa type before travel or leave and re-enter.
Visa on arrival is also available at major land borders like Namanga (from Kenya) and Sirari (from Kenya). The same $50 USD fee applies. Have cash ready.
If you're arriving directly from Belgium, no. But if you've recently been in a country with yellow fever (e.g., parts of South America or Africa), you'll need proof of vaccination. Check the latest requirements before travel.
Yes, Tanzania offers an e-visa through the official immigration website. It costs about $50 USD and takes 3–10 business days to process. Some travellers prefer this to avoid queues at the airport.
You may be denied boarding by the airline or refused entry by immigration. Always have a confirmed onward or return ticket before you travel.
No, it's not mandatory for entry. But it's strongly recommended. Medical evacuation from a remote area can cost thousands of dollars. A basic policy covering medical and trip cancellation is a good idea.
