Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Bulgarian passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to be in Mexico. Mexico does not require 6 months of validity beyond your departure date, but airlines may still check for it — if your passport expires within 3 months of travel, call your airline before booking.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Mexico
Immigration officers at Mexico City, Cancún, and other airports routinely ask for a return or onward flight within your 180-day stay. Have a printed or digital copy of your ticket ready — they scan the barcode at the counter.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Officers may ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a return ticket. A hotel confirmation or a letter from a host with their address and phone number works fine.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Immigration can ask for bank statements or cash to prove you have enough money for your stay. A credit card with a decent limit usually satisfies them — carry a recent statement just in case.Recommended
6-month passport validity is strictly enforced
Mexican immigration checks your passport's expiry date against your entry date. If you have less than 6 months left, you will be denied boarding by the airline. No exceptions.
Keep your FMM paper safe
The small paper form you get at immigration is your proof of legal stay. Lose it and you'll pay a fine at departure (around 500–600 MXN). Keep it inside your passport at all times.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Mexican immigration
At the airport (e.g., Cancún, Mexico City, Los Cabos), follow signs to 'Migración' or 'Extranjeros'. Join the queue for foreign visitors. Have your passport and boarding pass ready.
2
Present your documents
Hand over your passport and, if asked, your return ticket (on your phone) and accommodation booking. The officer will ask a few questions — typically how long you're staying and where you'll be. Answer honestly.
3
Get your entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport and may give you a paper FMM (Forma Migratoria Múltiple). Keep that paper safe — you'll need to hand it back when you leave Mexico. If you lose it, you'll pay a fine at departure.
4
Collect luggage and exit
After immigration, collect your bags from the carousel, then proceed through customs. You may be asked to press a button for a random luggage inspection — just follow instructions.

Frequently asked questions

No. The visa-free stay is strictly 180 days. You cannot extend it from within Mexico. If you want to stay longer, you'd need to leave the country (e.g., to the US or Guatemala) and re-enter, but immigration may question frequent back-to-back visits. For stays over 180 days, apply for a temporary residence visa at a Mexican consulate before you travel.
No. There is no mandatory online pre-registration for Bulgarian passport holders. You just show up at immigration. However, some airlines may ask for an FMM (Forma Migratoria Múltiple) — you can fill it out on the plane or at the airport kiosk. It's free and takes 2 minutes.
You will likely be denied boarding by the airline or refused entry by Mexican immigration. The 6-month rule is strictly enforced. Renew your passport before you travel.
Technically, the tourist stamp does not permit paid work for a Mexican employer. Remote work for a foreign company is a grey area — many digital nomads do it without issues, but officially it's not allowed. Mexico has a separate 'Residente Temporal' visa for remote workers if you plan to stay long-term.
You'll need to pay a fine at the airport when you leave — typically around 500–600 MXN (about €25–30). You can also replace it at the immigration office (INM) in your city before departure, but that takes time. Best to keep it in your passport.
No. If you're transiting through a Mexican airport and staying airside (not passing through immigration), you don't need a visa. But if you need to leave the transit area or stay overnight, you'll need to clear immigration under the visa-free rules above.
No entry fee for Bulgarian passport holders. Some airports (like Cancún) include a small 'Visitax' in your airline ticket or hotel bill — it's around 200–300 MXN (€10–15) and is collected separately, but it's not an immigration requirement.
