Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for your entire stay in Norway
Your Bulgarian passport needs to be valid for the whole time you're in Norway. Norway follows Schengen rules — you can stay up to 90 days within any 180-day period across the entire Schengen zone, not just Norway.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from the Schengen area
Immigration at Oslo Gardermoen and other Norwegian ports of entry routinely asks for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy ready showing you leave the Schengen zone within your 90-day visa-free limit.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a hotel confirmation, Airbnb booking, or a letter from your host in Norway. Border officers rarely ask for it, but if they do, not having it can delay your entry.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Have a bank statement or credit card showing access to at least 500 NOK per day of your stay. Immigration may ask to see it if you look like you might work or overstay.Recommended
Schengen area rules apply
Norway is part of the Schengen Area but not the EU. Your 90-day visa-free limit applies across all 27 Schengen countries combined. A trip to France or Germany counts toward the same 90-day clock.
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Airlines check passport validity at check-in. If your passport has less than 6 months remaining, you may be denied boarding even if you have a valid reason to travel. Double-check your passport's expiry date before booking.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents before you travel
Check your passport validity (6+ months from entry date). Book your return/onward ticket and first night accommodation. Save confirmations as screenshots or PDFs on your phone. Arrange travel insurance if you want coverage.
2
Arrive at a Norwegian airport or border crossing
Major airports like Oslo Gardermoen, Bergen, or Stavanger have dedicated EU/EEA lanes. As a Bulgarian passport holder, you can use the EU/EEA queue. Have your passport and supporting documents ready.
3
Present your passport to the immigration officer
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask: purpose of visit, length of stay, where you are staying, and proof of return. Answer clearly. They will stamp your passport with the entry date. That stamp starts your 90-day Schengen clock.
4
Collect your luggage and exit
After the immigration check, proceed to baggage claim (if you checked bags), then walk through customs. Norway has a green channel for goods under duty-free limits. If you have nothing to declare, just walk through.

Frequently asked questions

You can stay up to 90 days within any 180-day period. This counts all days spent in Norway plus any other Schengen countries. Use the Schengen calculator on the EU website to track your days.
No, the 90-day visa-free stay is not extendable for tourism or short visits. If you need to stay longer, you must apply for a residence permit before your 90 days expire. Overstaying can lead to fines, deportation, or a re-entry ban.
No, Bulgarian passport holders do not need a transit visa for Norway. You can stay in the international transit area without passing through immigration. If your layover requires you to enter Norway (e.g., overnight), the 90-day visa-free rule applies.
You will likely be denied boarding by the airline or entry by Norwegian immigration. Renew your passport before traveling. The 6-month validity is a strict requirement for visa-free entry.
It is not routinely required, but immigration officers can ask. Have a credit card or bank statement ready showing you can cover your stay. A general guideline is about 500 NOK per day, but this is rarely enforced for Bulgarian citizens.
No, the visa-free stay is for tourism, business meetings, or short visits only. You cannot work for a Norwegian employer or perform paid work for a local company. Remote work for a foreign employer is generally tolerated, but it is a grey area. Check with the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (UDI) if unsure.
Overstaying is a violation of Schengen rules. You may face a fine, deportation, and a re-entry ban of up to 5 years. If you realize you will overstay, contact the UDI immediately to discuss options.
