Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to stay in Tajikistan. Airlines may ask to see at least 6 months of validity remaining, so check with your carrier before departure.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Tajikistan
Immigration officers at Dushanbe International Airport routinely ask for a confirmed return or onward ticket. Have a printed copy or a digital version on your phone ready to show.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Border officials may request proof of where you will stay. A hotel confirmation or a letter from a host with their address and contact number works fine.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient money for your stay
Carry enough cash or a credit card to cover your expenses. Immigration can ask to see proof of funds, though this is rarely checked for short visits.Recommended
Visa-free entry is for tourism and business only
You cannot work or study under the visa-free arrangement. If you plan to work, study, or stay longer than 30 days, you must apply for the appropriate visa at a Tajik embassy before you travel.
Overstaying the 30-day limit
Overstaying even by a day can result in a fine of 100-200 TJS and a note in your immigration record. In serious cases, you could be detained or banned from re-entry. Set a reminder to leave before day 30.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents before departure
Check your passport validity (6+ months from entry date). Book your return/onward ticket and first night accommodation. Save confirmations as screenshots on your phone. Arrange travel insurance and a local SIM or eSIM.
2
Arrive at Dushanbe International Airport or other entry point
Most travelers fly into Dushanbe International Airport (DYU). You can also enter via land borders from Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, or Afghanistan. At the airport, follow signs to 'Passport Control'.
3
Go through immigration
Hand over your passport and any requested documents. The officer will check your visa-free eligibility, stamp your passport, and let you through. No visa application or fee is needed. The process usually takes 2-5 minutes per person.
4
Collect your luggage and exit
After immigration, proceed to baggage claim, then customs. If you have nothing to declare, use the green channel. You are now free to enter Tajikistan.

Frequently asked questions

No, the visa-free stay is not extendable. If you want to stay longer than 30 days, you need to apply for a visa before you travel. Overstaying can result in a fine of 100-200 TJS and a note in your immigration record, which may affect future entries.
You will be denied boarding by the airline and entry by Tajik immigration. Renew your passport before you travel. The 6-month validity is strictly enforced.
For stays up to 30 days, no registration is required. If you stay longer with a visa, you must register with the Ministry of Internal Affairs within 3 days of arrival. Since the visa-free stay is only 30 days, this does not apply to you.
Yes, you can enter via land borders. Common crossings include Oybek from Uzbekistan and Karamyk from Kyrgyzstan. The same visa-free rules apply. Ensure your passport is stamped on entry.
Always carry your passport with the entry stamp. Police may ask for identification. Keep a photocopy or digital scan as backup. If driving, you need an International Driving Permit (IDP) and vehicle registration documents.
It is not mandatory for entry, but strongly recommended. Medical care in Tajikistan can be expensive, and evacuation to a better-equipped country like Turkey or Dubai can cost thousands of dollars. A basic travel insurance policy covers this.
The local currency is the Tajikistani somoni (TJS). US dollars are widely accepted for exchange and sometimes for payment in tourist areas. Bring crisp, new USD notes for the best exchange rates. ATMs are available in Dushanbe but may be unreliable elsewhere.
