Tajikistan customs rules & duty-free allowances

Last reviewed July 2, 2026·Official source

Tajikistan strictly controls cash, religious materials, and electronic devices. Declare cash over 10,000 USD or equivalent in somoni—failure risks seizure and fines up to 100%. Religious literature must be declared; 'extremist' materials are banned. Satellite phones and drones require permits. These rules apply to all non-resident adult travellers entering Tajikistan in 2026.

Arriving: red vs green channel

Use the green channel if you have nothing to declare and are within duty-free limits; red channel if you exceed allowances or carry restricted/prohibited items. Fill out a customs declaration form (available in English and Russian) and hand it to an officer. Keep a copy for departure.

Bringing medication

Personal medications for up to 30 days are allowed without a prescription. For longer courses or controlled substances (e.g., codeine, tramadol), bring a doctor's prescription and a letter explaining the condition. Some common Western drugs (e.g., certain antidepressants) are classified as narcotics in Tajikistan—check with the embassy.

Food, plants & animal products

Meat, dairy, fruits, vegetables, seeds, and plants require a phytosanitary certificate. Banned: pork products from countries with African swine fever, and any food from Afghanistan or China without special permits.

Rules worth knowing

Religious materials scrutiny

Any religious literature, including Bibles, must be declared. The government bans materials deemed 'extremist' or promoting non-traditional religions. It's safest to bring only personal copies.

Currency declaration is mandatory

You must declare any cash or monetary instruments (e.g., traveler's cheques) exceeding 10,000 USD or equivalent in TJS. Failure to declare can result in confiscation and a fine of up to 100% of the amount.

No duty-free shops at land borders

Duty-free allowances apply only at airports. If entering by land (e.g., from Uzbekistan or Kyrgyzstan), you cannot purchase duty-free goods on arrival—only personal items within the 800 USD limit.

Electronic devices may be searched

Customs officers may inspect laptops, phones, and memory cards for prohibited content (e.g., pornography, extremist material). Ensure your devices are clean of any questionable files.
